Yes
Were I to spend some money on upgrading from my 1000d would 600d owners say it's a big enough jump in quality

It's going from an entry level DSLR to a DSLR with much more professional features. The 1000D is a great camera, but the 600D opens you up professionally. I'm a 500D owner myself, and after playing with a 1100D, I can say I'm happy where I am. I'm not going to say the 600D will make you a better photographer, but you will certainly notice the quality. ISO reduction and so on.

Honestly, no. I'd say go for a 550D. IMO, the 550D and the 600D are the EXACT same camera. All aside from a tilting screen.

And then once you've got the 550D, Grip it ;D

Depending on the type of photography you take, tilting screen can be fantastic. I've recently discovered the creativity of these with my little G3

How is the 1000d limiting you? If you still have the kit lens you would probably find replacing the kit lens with a better one as more of an improvement

From a videographers standpoint, the swivelling LCD screen is fantastic. I don't see how it is much use to a photographer though, since the camera is stuck with contrast detection AF in live view which takes an eternity. Sure you can switch it to quick mode but it's cumbersome - it flips the mirror down, uses phase detection AF, flips the mirror back up once it has a lock...but as far as I know you can't set the focus point so it'll just use any and you may not get the results you want.

Personally I never shoot stills in live view, it's a gimmick to me.

The 550D is a great beginner camera, I'd say I use mine harder than the average 550D owner and it performs very well. Plus you can get them very cheap now, under £450 for the body or so I've been told.

The 1000d is a really nice camera but I will be getting thefunds for a 400l lens and want get a high spec camera Togo with it now while themoney is there

You should give it a try, another world of creativity ;)

I would but like I said the lack of fast autofocus puts me off. In the type of photography I do, I don't have time to wait 3-4 seconds for it to lock :)

You will get video, more reach from the higher MP count and a much nicer LCD screen.

To clarify someone's earlier post, the 600D is not a professional camera, and that's not what it's designed for. But it would be a nice upgrade if you have some good quality lenses already though, which you will need with that 18MP sensor :)

im hoping to upgrade from my 1000d soon to but im aiming for the 60d i was in same boat as you but i chose to upgrade my glass first then cam after

Me personally i would be looking at better glass then going up to the xxD range as oppossed to another entry level camera which in a effect the 1000D and the 600D are.

spike

Looks like that`s the sensible option then, i presently have a nifty fifty which to be honest i bought because everyone said it was the lens you must have and i never use it , and my tamron 70-300 which i use all the time, i am in the process of saving for a canon 400mm 5.6 L but hat`s a long term item but would like a lens of similar size to the tamron but better optically but for about £230.00 maximum

was a big improvment i found when i upgrade my glass from the EF/s 50-250is lens to my 70-200mm L lens

Off topic sorry!

Does your 70-200mm L have IS? And if it doesn't do you miss it? Only asking as I am deciding between these 2 lenses and would like to stretch to the L lens but concerned about lack of IS. It would be the F4 I would get, I will mainly be shooting motorsport.

Ruffdog64, what sort of thing do you shoot?
I would have thought that maybe the better fps of the xxD range would be an advantage to you?

it depends how steady your hands are, iv not realy had a prob if its been dark like it was on wrc then i bumped iso up and sutter speed and not had a problem. There is a IS version of the 70-200mm L F/4 lens but its almost an extra £400, and idd when u do upgrede you cam not mutch point of getting 600d as you still be on same FPS as the 1100d same as my 1000d you better off gowing for xxD range like mike said above. same reason im saving for the 60d now.

Ok cheers for the feedback!

To be honest i plan on concentrating on wildlife photography which is why the canon 400mm f5.6 L is a long term lens (hopefully just after xmas) i`ve also got a hide and ghilli suit, but if the 600d isn`t going to be much better perhaps i`ll have another think, i did see some canon !d mk2`s for sale but again my lack of knowledge may let me down,Harvey

I think your best bet might be to have a look in the sales threads on here and get yourself a 50d or similar

In my opinion, I think I'd go for a bigger jump and maybe go for the 60D, or as suggested by MJ - a used 50D (I actually think there's a 60D for sale on there at the minute). I have a 500D which is a great little camera but definitely not something I'd put in the semi-pro range, I regard it as a higher spec entry level camera but there is a visible difference between which lens I use. I'm lucky to have a couple of good prime lenses but I am already getting frustrated at the fact that I need to teeter below ISO800, I'd love to be able to push it further.

Were you thinking of the 1D or 5D mk 2? I have read (on here as well as other places) that many wildlife photographers prefer crop cameras over FF (5D's FF) as the crop factor gives you that extra reach but, as with everything, it is down to personal preference

If you get the 400mm f/5.6 I think the higher iso capability of the 600D would be an asset.

Had that lens myself and found the lack of IS and the need for a high shutter speed rather limiting on anything but bright days (used mine with a 40D)

Not got the steadiest hand hold and perhaps hire one before buying to see how you get on, also the fixed focal length did sometimes mean I missed the shot I really wanted. Unexpected appearance of a water vole springs to mind, by the time I backtracked just got the ripples where it submerged
