67mm thread ND filter on a 77mm lens

Would anyone have any first hand experience of using a step down ring and putting a 67mm filter on a 77mm lens (in this case a Canon17-55 f2.8).
Just trying to get an idea how bad the vignetting might be at the wide end. Thanks

That would be a disastrous recipe for
heavy vignetting and stealing light!
I would not recommend it!

Many thanks. I want to purchase a variable ND, ideally to cover all of my lenses. I know that conventional wisdom would be to purchase a 77mm and use step down rings but if I do that, then I'm not going to be able to use a hood on the lens that I will be using the most (67mm thread).
Maybe I'll just go for a 67mm and worry about the 77mm if and when I start using it in earnest.

Definitely don't use a 67mm filter on a 77mm lens, and I'm not sure if a variable ND filter is a very good idea either. Reviews of them in the past have been rather poor.

Cut a 67mm diameter hole in a piece of card and stick it over the front of your lens to see the effect.
