70-200 f/2.8 VR. Is this normal?

I have been doing some tests of my 70-200 and 300 f/2.8's with and without TC's. I have got some results from that and I know what I need to do. However when comparing shots with my 70-200 with NO TC at f/2.8 and f/8 I am a little concerned at the f/2.8 results. Is this sharpness correct?

Agree with the above, but i'm not quite sure what your point is here (to OP) they look quite sharp on my monitor, also how do you have your camera set up ie in relation to extra sharpness settings ?

Still fairly sharp at f2.8! but as said it will be at its best at around f8.

I've not heard of a lens yet that is totally sharp wide open so yes, your findings are normal.

Although the 70-200mm is a cracking f2.8 lens it won't perform as well wide open as Nikon's f2.8 primes. Your example looks pretty normal to me.

70-200 is pin sharp at 2.8, one of the reasons it's so expensive. F8 is slightly sharper, but not by much. Just did a test on my copy to confirm.

f2.8, at that close subject distance, should be sharper...

Thank god for that I thought I had a problem. I was focusing on the red LG logo. Maybe the bricks look sharper because they show more detail/texture then the white plastic AC unit? I am not too sure.

Were they shot in raw or .jpg?

If raw and converted to jpg with no sharpening it would look soft.


Remember in camera sharpening does not effect the raw.

Suppose it's a subjective statement - how sharp is a pin? Always (personally) thought of pin sharp as very sharp

They were taken in RAW but I applied the same sharpening to all the photos in a batch process.

Ummmmm not sure if that is possible in PS or Bridge. I know it is in NX but I don't have that installed right now.
