Is it worth having both of these? I want to use them for general shots as well as Motorsport. I have a Tamron 150-600 but think the Canon L might give better results

Any opinions before I press the button on this?
 
save yourself a ton of money and get the 70-200 F2.8 Lii and the 2x extender. sure you lose a few stops of light using the extender..but motorsport who cares as you want that depth of field anyways.

also the 70-200 has a better range of uses..my most used lens I think.

Can vouch for the 2xIII extender with the 70-200 II - works a treat. 400mm f/5.6 IS on a 5DIII or 640mm (Eff) f/5.6 IS on a 7D2 - what's not to like! :)
 
Bought a 100-400 MkIi recently. Haven't used my 70-200 2.8 since. Probably sell it soon. The 100-400 is great and whilst I'm sure that the image quality of the 70-200 with x2 is very good and was more that up to the task against the MkI 100-400 the MkII is comfortably sharper than the MkI.

If more reach for minimum outlay is the requirement then the x2 is a no brainer. You will also get slightly more reach with the 70-200 & x2 over the 100-400.

Eh? 200 x 2 = 400, last time I checked.
 
The 100-400 isn't a true 400mm Stewart. When I compared the two lenses after I bought the 100-400 it is slightly down on focal length.

The original MIkI 100-400 was the same. Around 380-385mm

Can you afford it - if so (as you've already got the 70-200), go for it. You can never have too many lenses :rolleyes::D:D

The 100-400 mkII gets very good reviews and I believe will take a 1.4TC as well (AF on certain bodies only) - giving you a further reach.

Another option (if you're not sure about it compared to your Tamron 150-600) is see if you can borrow one / hire one for a short while and see what you think about the lens and does it perform better for you compared to your Tamron....
 
If you are a pro and are selling images = buy the 100-400Mkii for that teeny bit better image quality

If you are not pro and not selling, use the equaly awesome 70-200mm mkii with an extender and take the misses and kids to spain for a week with the rest ;)

I think you CAN have too many lenses covering the same focal length..sometimes you sit there pondering what is the best lens to take on the day, then all day shooting thinking "i wish I brought the other lens with me".
 
i shoot a fair amount of Motorsport and typically use the 70-200II on a 1DX and the 100-400II on a 7D2, not much overlap if you consider the crop factor. They are just fantastic together.

Last year I used the 70-200 with a 2x for a bit and didn't like it. Sharpness took a hit, AF took a fairly large hit and 140mm wasn't enough at the wide end. That being said I do know of 2 chaps who use the 70-200II and TC and they seem happy enough.
 
There's a bit of weight difference between a 70-200 2.8 II with 2x extender and a 100-400 II with the combo being 175g heavier so if weights a problem make a wise choice. I'm starting to find my beloved Sigma 150-500 OS is affecting my elbows as I've started getting arthritis in them so I'm thinking of selling the Sigma and my Canon 300 f4L IS prime and putting the money towards the 100-400 II. I have got a 100-400 MkI but the wife keeps claiming it when were both out at the same time. I have used my 70-200 2.8 II and 2x extender to great effect in the past and I find the output from that is as good, if not slightly better than my 100-400 MkI.
 
If your camera body will AF at f8 the 100-400 takes a pretty decent pic with a 1.4 on it.
 
I've taken the plunge and bought the 100 400 ii.
 
I've got both, Rick, and at the moment for wildlife in good light I'm using the new 100-400, and occasionally with the 1,4 mk3 extender (when of course there's a limit on your focusing points).....will keep both for a bit and see how things shape up, I'm very loath to part with the 2.8 lenses (I also have the mk2 300 2.8 and just got the new 400mm f4 DO mk2....which is a stunner by the way...!!) and have the same quandary there.
I suspect something will have to go, but it won't be the 100-400 or the 400 DO mk2 thats for sure!!

ive recently traded up from a 100-400 mkI to a mkII and havent looked back.

I know you've taken the plunge already, but just thought I would add. The other evening I was gutted to realise I'd turned up at a local floodlit football match with the wrong lens! I'd taken my new 100-400II instead of my 70-200 f/2.8 II. Annoyingly I'd even switched lenses before I went - I'm just not used to owning two big white lenses. Anyway, I was absolutely astounded by the results. You will not be disappointed
