Well, As my previous 3rd party batteries were pretty OK, decided that for £21 from the bay I'd get another 2. Just as well they sent a free charger as the 3rd party batteries won't charge in the Canon battery charger.

Never had this problem with my 50D before - Is this normal?

So now have the Canon charger for the Canon battery and the other charger for the other 3rd party batteries

Go to the menu on the camera and see if the 3rd party battery has any info in the battery info screen. If not it means the canon battery has a memory system built in, and the 3rd partys do not. Which means the canon charger is looking for info before it will charge the battery. IMHO

Several of the listings on ebay currently state that their batteries will not charge in the Canon charger.
This will be because of the ID chip in them. (or rather not in them).
Apparently the canon batteries will charge in the extra charger. I would be a little wary though, as to whether the charging history is really being recorded into the battery.

Mmm, looks like 2 chargers will be needed then, 1 for the Canon and one for the 3rd party. Never realised this may be an issue.

Thanks for the enlightenment folks
