Right need to upgrade in the next two weeks, but just cant decide..

Right 100% of my shots are motocross, at the moment i'm using 40d's. Now I wish to upgrade, I have narrowed it down to the two models, 7D & 1D mk3, so what one? I heard bad about both, please can someone give me a bit of guidance, main thing I need I good AF & sharp images..

Help...

i had a similar pondering recently but before i looked too much into the differences between the 2 i had the chance to purchase a good priced 1Dmk3... and WOW its a beast. theres a fair bit more to learn compared to the old 20D in terms of focus settings but for its first outing at an event today its already proved itself to me.

i picked mine up for 1300 with 6 months warranty, in reasonable "used" condition but mechanically sound.

I had the 7D and it's a very capable camera, does the video functionality interest you at all? I traded for a 1DmkIII and the only thing I miss is the exra reach of the 1.6x crop. Apart from that the 1D is far better for my needs. I'm only a hobbyist but I shoot Rugby a lot and have a highly mobile young daughter! It's so quick for AF and servo AF is great, the 10fps is pretty handy too. It's very rare I have a shot that's missed due to the 1D and not my own lack of skill, actually I can't think of any off hand. I rarely post process now either, apart from basic resizing. Another feature of the 7D is the better ability to crop due to the higher MP, but if you don't need this... Low ISO noise is better (much cleaner) on the 1D as well, I was quite suprised with this on the 7D, pretty much the only negative I could level at the camera.

Both are very capable cameras but I wouldn't, no couldn't go back to 7D now after the 1D. Not without a bit of whinging anyway! :)

Colin... take it from someone who you know shoots the same stuff as you... 1D MkIII and don't even think twice.

If it was me I'd look for a good MkII.

I had a 7D, and while it was a great step up from the 5D I had in terms of the AF etc. I decided to sell it for a used 1D3. I got a mint one from MPB photographic and it is a big step up from the 7D.

Yes the screen is better on the 7D, and it has some nice bells and whistles, but the 1D3 feels so much better in the hand. The battery lasts forever, and the AF performance is superb. I am now getting sharper shots when shooting sports:thumbs:

I didn't like to go "off piste" Dod :D

Colin hi,
how's the door coming along :) (yes mine)

You know my view, I was gutted I bought the 50D just before the 7 came out and was lucky enough to get an e-bay special 1D (Mk2), it slaughters the 50 and as much as I'm sure the 7 is a good camera everything about the 1 feels so 'professional' and I forgot to mention battery life. I took 300 shots the other day as I was testing for a problem I thought it had, I wont even consider putting it on charge for an age yet, that's the battery that came with the camera which is probably 5 years old.
Let me know if you want to have a play with mine and we can sort something out, not at a MX event though eh!

Its an interesting choice. I have no experience of a MkIII (it didn't offer me enough over the MkII to upgrade) but I now run a 7D and a MkIV side by side.

The 7D is very good for the money and will stand up well against the MkIV in most applications. The MkIV certainly isn't 3x better.

I'm glad to have both as I can pick and choose. For some applications, the lighter weight of the 7D can make a big difference (as I can couple it with lighter lenses for the same effective reach) but for ultimate quality I pick the MkIV...

Would you take the 7D to a rough environment though, would it take a bit of a bashing, rain etc.
As you say the smaller body can have advantages but I know Colin goes to rough, muddy, dust and or wet sprts events, would a 7d take that punishment and isnt that one of the reasons why the 1D series cost so much more than the 'prosumer' bodies.

How many batteries does it hold, will it last a whole day??

Battery life is great. I use servo a lot and the last battery info readout before I charged showed 2700 shots taken.

I don't use the screen a great deal (would impact on battery life), if you've used the screen on the 7D it is far better than the screen on the 1D. The first time I used the 1D I thought all my photos were out of focus until I got them onto a PC! The screen is lacking but I soon got used to its lack of resolution.

I don't treat either of my cameras any differently (which if they ever are offered for sale is indoors only!)

I've used both side by side in snow and had them covered in water, mud, sand, snow etc and had no issues.

Hi Matt

Yes the doors looking good, just needs finish coat, if your in this evening drop me a mail, can do then, otherwise, booked in with the wife for tomorrow evening...

Thanks, you were a great help with your views. Thank you for the kind offer of the lend of the mk2... but you can understand, I would never borrow a someone elses camera for the stuff I do... I feel bad taking it in for a clean every few months..girl at canon always looks at me strange..

Thanks Colin

If any of you have never done MX you won't know quite how *****ty things get.

I think most of TP wouldn't even want to leave their cameras in the car at a MX meet, because even there they will get dusty and muddy!

Thats why I suggest the MkIII, its built to take the bashing and a bashing it WILL get if you want to shoot MX come rain or shine.

True I have never done motorcross but my cameras do work for their living. Mud is just surface and will wash off. Its water than ingresses more and snow is one of the worst causes as it sticks to the camera and then melts in. Its almost like submerging it.

As I said, I have no personal experience of a 1DIII but I do know my 7D kept working in conditions this year that were worse than the ones that made my 1DII stop the year before (albeit temporarily). I have experience nothing yet in taking 18,000 frames on my 7D (of which over 17,000 were outdoors) that would make me suspect it has any problems with weather sealing. That includes saline spray, snow, heavy rain, mud, sitting in snow, being dropped into snow so it was completely covered, wet sand, dry sand, etc

Since the OP has used 40D and not complained about them breaking, I struggle to see why you think the sealing on a 7D won't be up to scratch.

the 1D?

1. and yes even AI SERVO'ing away like a mad man. (official figure for the battery is 2200 shots*)

*depending on things like AI SERVO etc.

Sounds good to me, normally 1000-2000 a day, with a bit of scrolling through just to check a few as I go..(dumping the awful ones...lol)

I can get a weekend out of my 1DMk3 and was thinking of getting a 7D to replace my 20D as my backup camera!

Carl.

Exactly. Whilst we might debate the exact model a 1 series, for me anyway, is a really easy decision to make. Never had an issue with mine in all sorts of conditions, snow included.

1D Mk III.... (I'm loving my Mk II so much that I've just bought a 1DS and I'm sure the III is better.) Once you've owned a 1 series I doubt you'll ever want to go back, I was hooked from my first shots with my 1NRS.
