Hi all
I will be upgrading to a new camera within the next couple of weeks and thought it was pretty straight forward by just getting the new canon 7D, but after reading many threads on various forums ( especially this one ) it seems my choice is not so simple as I thought.
I have also been looking at the 1Dsmk2 and it seems a fantatic camera with great auto focus and build quality as well, but will only shoot 4fps. I want a camera with enough pixcels to get a decent crop out of and picture quality is first, second and third.
My main photography is wildlife and macro, I have a canon 1dmk2 which is excellent but not the best camera for cropping in close, and have never really shot it above 3fps, but have'nt really done much with bif's and this is something I really want to try this year. Isn't 4fps enough for bif and some moderately fast action shots.
Will the relatively slow 4fps of the 1dsmk2 be enough or will the 7D be the all round one to get.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have both and use them for wildlife. For ultimate quality, the 1DsII is the better camera but it is heavy and you need longer glass for the same field of view as it is full frame. I don't worry about 4fps as that is plenty fast enough for what I shoot (in fact I rarely shoot in burst mode) but the 1Ds can fill the buffer and take a while to empty - for me this is the main downside.

If I'm going out for a serious trip, then the 1DsII and 500/4 go out. The fact I can use the 7D and a 300/4 for the same field of view and it's only about 2kg rather than about 5.5 means that the 7D is getting a lot more casual use.

If you have lenses to fill the frame then a 1Ds will be king, but the 7D offers you a 1.6 crop before you start if you are reach limited...

grumpybadger makes some very valid points. A 7d with a 300mm F/4 offers "similar" reach and performance to the 1dsII mated with a 500mm F/4. The cost difference and convenience of use between these two options is huge.

Which lenses do you currently own?

Hi and thanks for your replies.
Reach is very important and I currently have a sigma 100-300mm f4 which I sometimes use a 1.4 tc, a canon 70-200 f2.8 also have tc, as well as various macro lenses. I am currently looking for a canon 100-400 and just missed one on this forum only an hour or so ago. So basically I'm gearing myself up for some serious wildlife work this year and just doing a little macro.
Thats what is so great about photography its so adaptable.

Tools for the job...
With your requirements for reach, I'd be buying the 7D. Might not have the DOF advantage of an FF camera, but it has very good AF (the tests I've read so far infer that it's on par with a 1 series), fast FPS, reasonable weather sealing and great battery life. On top of that, it'll help keep the weight down whilst dragging it around on expeditions on both the body and associated lenses.
BTW, go checkout the 400mm F5.6. Great wildlife lens.

For what you want it for, i would say the 7D for the reach more than anything, although the 1DsmkII would give you greater cropping ability.

If you can also get a 100-400 then the 1Ds comes more into play, but with your current lenses i'd say the 7D is more the tool for the jobs you do
