7D Question

So where are all the pictures from them then? Sorry if I am being impatient, but after reading all the hype from people that were going to purchase the Mutts Nuts, I would have expected to see some decent shots by now. Maybe you are all still wading through the manual and making fine adjustments before presenting us with the Wow!! factor :shrug: I have seen nothing so far to impress, two cardboard box`s a few cars and Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim flying late one evening ;) Hopefully someone can do it justice ;)
 
To be honest, I doubt many people could tell the difference between a photo shot on a 400D or a 1D MKIII in the format we put them on here. 800px isn't enough to distinguish anything... the most noticeable differences at this scale will all be lens related.

Unless people posted 100% crops alongside then I don't bother with listening to the hype...at least...on a forum level!

But the main point of the 7D is the AF, and you cant 'see' that in a photo, other than the person was able to take a series of shots in focus, where another camera might stuggle.
 
Well at the weekend it was pretty dire where I was.
I took a couple of shots of a bird ~200 yards away, in flight. I reckon I wasn't used to the settings (well underexposed by a mile), but an 800px crop, almost is filled by the bird.
 
I'm still struggling with the tracking AF on birds in close proximity I have to say but Saturday ended up being ISO1600 in woods and even my 1Ds would struggle there. Still want to have a play with the custom functions a bit.

Reckon a trip to Gigrin will be in order to set it up at some point!

Got some statics I'll be posting later and I have to say I am pretty happy with them.

:thinking: I will beg to differ on that one Phil, in general if I look at somebodys picture I can usually ( not all the time admitted ) tell if it has been taken on a high end full frame be it Canon or Nikon before looking at that persons sig, there is just something about the overall appearance that makes it stand out, something that cannot as far as I am concerned be replicated by any amount of editing. Much in the same way as I can tell if some pictures were taken on a mid range Nikon, there is that real deep colour to them, lets face it they all have there noticable points. Getting back on the subject though, apart from the AF system what I am saying is in the right hands the 7D should in theory produce superior results and I would have thought somebody might have posted up a half decent image to pursuade me to get one :lol::lol: ;)

I did say I doubt many people, and I do dispute the editing point. Photoshop has put MPs in pictures they weren't present for... I for one know it can totally change the depth of a picture having spent 3 years with it permanently in use during uni :)

It may have been a slight over exaggeration between a 400D and a 1D MKIII, but could you honestly tell the difference between an 800px wide photo shot on a 30D/40D/50D and a 7D? I know for one I couldn't. But then, I'm not a gear/pixel obsessive!

If you want to be tempted in to buying one.. then go play with one and see how the hardware performs properly :) One wow picture shouldn't by any means be the deciding factor on whether to hit buy or not!

Remember, it's the lens that first affects colours, it's the lens that first affects sharpness...and so on!
 
I'm 120 miles away from my 7D and won't be back until Friday. I will be hoping to go somewhere to take some photos over the weekend.

As you put it Phil a slight over exaggeration on the Wow!! bit :D as for the difference of 800px wide photo shot on a 30D/40D/50D and a 7D? It is not a case of me being pixel obsessive! :thinking: Just reckon I might have seen a picture with that little something to it so to speak :D :thumbs:

In fact I have already posted some 7D pics, and they were hardly wow, but then nothing I ever post is that good :D
 
I seriously screwed this shot up. Had to add +1 in PP to get it light enough. I also missed the metering.
However, it is plain to me that this could not have been taken with a 400d, at 200yds
 
Well like I say the wow was a bit ott but anyway, Cosmix has just put a post up in the bird section and I for one think that it is the first decent shot I have seen on TP from the 7D and it is imo looking Very nice ;)

And here lies my point... :p A wow photo taken on a 40D isn't going to look all that different to the same photo taken on a 7D... except for the fact it'll have more pixels/better noise handling - neither of which aren't really a problem when we are dealing with such a low resolution! If we were dealing with full res/RAW files then I'd understand!

The fact that the focus on the 40D might not have got the photo... whereas the 7D did, is not really something you can comment on unless you have indeed tried both side by side! That is purely one of those things that you can go out, and test yourself... no photo can actually tell you it as such. :)

Basically...the 7D isn't going to start making people good photographers! It's the same with all new camera launches...

I agree, the 7D is a stonkingly good camera regards ISO performance etc... but shots of birdies at ISO 400, at 800px wide ain't going to make me want to buy one!

Just my 2p :)

Thats a fair comment Phil, we will just have to give it a bit more time and get any owners opinions on whether or not the end justifies the means ;)

Indeedy... it seems like an 'experience' camera rather than 'results' .... or so I've heard :D

:shrug: Sorry Paul I wasnt being funny about that shot, its just that I took one the following evening of a chimney stack aprox 150yrds away against a dull sky 40 minutes later than you took that one, yes I had more noise showing when cropped but other than that the colour of the red brick work and sharpness looked good.I have mentioned before people just seem hung up about noise, it is something that is with us and will be for a while untill they can eliminate it altogether, so my point as such was seeing shots from people showing a bit of noise on a crop which you would never print off anyway seems a pointless excersise :shrug:
