I think i've seen somewhere that you need to switch something off on the 7D to get the best raw images out of the camera, or am i going mad?

I switch all in-camera processing off. From memory that is Peripheral Illumination, High ISO Noise Reduction and Long Exposure Noise Reduction. All of these affects can be achieved with (arguably) better results via post processing software.

Hi sorry for my ignorance but i have just got into photography and know nothing, So could some one please explain what exaqctly a raw picture is.
Thanks

Spike

HTP is the real dodgy setting that you should disable, as it physically affects the raw capture. Anything else is just a bunch of data fields that can be turned off/on/adjusted after you've taken the shot, in DPP. Most other software will ignore those other settings anyway.

You should also aim to get your exposure right, or expose to the right, when you shoot. Underexposing and brightening later is bad news for noise and tonal detail.

I still process mainly via DPP (which swag doesn't I believe), so I should be able to remove it afterwards

 I do use DPP to covert to raw and do any needed tweaks in DPP before using CS3 for the processing. Can I switch the High Iso thingie on or off in DPP? If so, I'll give it a try and see if there's any difference.

A RAW file contains uncompressed image data from the camera. Shooting RAW offers the best possible picture quality and editing possibilities.

I originally thought that the High ISO setting, pre-sets the values for Luminance and Chromiance noise, and auto-applies it within DPP. It changes these values (I believed) dependent on the ISO value.
However, I have just changed mine back to standard.
So under Tools Pallete, NR/Lens/ALO, with the High ISO disabled in the camera, both of the sliders report (for me) 0 and 0, with is set to disable or standard. I can see no visible difference! Even at 12800

However, we know from other peoples threads that sometimes these are not 0

Thanks guys.

No worries spike, we were all beginners once (i still am) :D
