7D "Walkabout" Lens Options

No, this was going to be fairly easy, as I've just sold my Sigma 24-70, and which was going to be replaced with either a 24-105 L, or the Canon 24-70 L.

However, I've managed to "lose" my Sigma 10-20 - yes, I can't find it anywhere. So, I've now widened my choice to include the 17-40 L. I have a 50mm f1.8, and 70-200 f4 L, so I could do without the extra range and use the 17-40 for landscapes and general work.

Has anybody out there used this lens on the 7D, and also the 17-55 f2.8 IS as I'd be interested in feedback.

I've owned the 17-40, 24-105 and 24-70 Canon L lenses and the lens I onw now is the 17-55. For me, its the perfect range of focal length on an APS-C camera, offers f/2.8 and IS. I'm well chuffed with mine...
 
Having not owned any of the above lenses other than the 17-55 f2.8, I cant offer comparisons.
I will say that as a walkabout or general purpoes lens its excellent, sharp, good colour reproduction, and useful IS. I was going to add a 24-105L to my lenses but have decided against it now I have the 17-55, the range it offers is plenty for what I need. Its a lens I wouldnt part with easily.
 
I'll second the 17-55 suggestions. I had a super sharp one on my old 450d and it was a complete winner, well worth the money. It's been replaced with an even sharper 24-70 but that's now on full frame.

For walkabout the 24-70 wouldn't be wide enough for me on a crop.

How about the Tamron 17-50? It's got quite a following.

I had a Sigma 17-70 for a while and loved it but I think the 7D will probably show it up a bit as it's only a cheap(ish) lens.
 
17-55 2.8 can't be beat :thumbs:
 
17-55 2.8 would be great on a crop over the 17-40 if speed is an issue.

Depends on what you shoot most of the time but you might find 24-105 L / 24-70 L a bit narrow on a crop.
 
I used my 17-55/2.8 on all the crop bodies I had before going FF, including the 7D. It is a stonking lens and gives a great focal length on a cropper. I had a nifty fifty at the same time, but sold it as the 50mm range was more than covered by the zoom.

The sharpness and colour rendition was superb. There is some hesitations around as some people seem to think it's a bit of a dust pump. I have to say that after 18 months of use, when I came to sell mine it had 2 small specks of dust in it - I think that's good going.

Best lens choice I ever made and certainly one that I never considered changing.
 
Have to agree with all the above re 17-55mm, mine has more than a couple of dust specks, but doesn't affect the picture quality one iota

You didnt tell me that when I bought it :nono: :rules: :lol:
Its still doing a good job though and a favourite lens of mine, the dust makes no difference at all :thumbs:
 
Thanks guys, I've been reading the review on The Digital Picture (Linky) and it does seem to hold it's own against even many of the L class lenses.

Best I go have a chat with Kerso....

You're clearly loving it though and it went to a good home - It's a lens I still miss on my cropper if I fancy going out and about with it.

AND you've just made me go back and look on the advert - Sorry I only mentioned 1 speck of dust :D
 
EFS18-55mm f2.8 damm good as is 17-40L f4 if you plan to move to FF in the future despite being a tad shorter than the 18-55 is a better long term bet IMO,

Ive got loadsa top kit but still have a EFS18-200is and I have to say that its not that bad,

OK its no L' but its a whole lot of lens in one, & very light by comparison
