(7D) What happens to a cameras sensor if i shoot at a lower res on a camera?

Theres quite alot of talk at the moment about the 7D being noisy at low ISO's.

If i select mRAW instead of RAW will this smooth my images out? I never print any bigger than A4 and don't need 18mp...

...in shooting Mraw does the camera act as if it has a 10mp (or so) sensor or does it simply use the 18mp sensor and remove pixels from the picture (which would still render the photos noisy).

Is there any disadvantage in me shooting mRAW? It still captures the same native information as a true raw file im assuming, just at a lower res. It must be a no brainer for 7D owners unhappy with the ISO at 100/200.

it is no different to reducing the resolution in post unfortunatly, it uses 18mpix and reduces the resolution after

At present there is still no pixel binding technology. There may be prototypes in development, however the current cameras simply drop the pixels. You are probably best of resizing them in post and running some NR. That won't recover dynamic range though.
