Hi,

I want to try out a Circular polariser but do not want to spend a lot as I may not use it.

Any one used the 7DS Circular polariser, are these okay to try as they are about £5?

Thank you

Sorry but you only get what you pay for and at £5 it will c--p better to buy a good one and as for not useing it, once bitten you will use it, please don't buy cheap glass to put in front of your expensive lens glass!!!

Russell Thanks.

I know what you are saying, will see what other are available.

I use a 7DS Circular poloriser and have done for a few years. It cost me £7 and I use it on my L lenses.

I've done tests and can find little problems with IQ I'm not saying there are no problems but none that I can see.

The way I see it is that if your a pro and use a CPL filter all the time then go expensive and get Hoya Pro or similar. If you want to just use one every 6 months for 10 shots then go cheap.

I used mine on the North Wales TP meet and it did exactlt what it says on the tin.

To brand everything that costs next to nothing as crap is a rather sweeping comment.

Oh and why use a cheap filter on a stupidly priced lens well because I can LOL :D

Fair enough but these tests, what did you compare it to? If you are just comparing it to with and without filter you don't really know what a better one might have given you.

I'm all for cheaper alternatives and photography gear has a history of taking something inexpensive and re marketing it at stupid prices. But my experience with lens filters is you get what you pay for. Can you give some more info on your filter, it it really is that good for that price I would be interested.

Nearly all the pictures that include skies included the use of this filter.

There is one at the end where I went completely bonkers with the colour of the sky.

I would like to point out that I have no problems paying for expensive kit if it's going to be used regularly, however for experimenting or occasional use then I wont pay £70 for something that stays in my bag.

As to testing it against other filters then I'd have to buy those filters, kind of defeats the object.

I've used my 77mm CPL ( price a Hoya one but sit down first ) on numerous occasions over the last few years.

What can I tell you, well with or without the filter I can't see any difference in sharpness. I don't get any wierd colour distortion, no noticable CA. No flares, and it's thin enough not to cause Vignetting.

If anyone would like me to try anything specific I'll try my best to test it asap.

Thanks ill take a look on the computer later, I'm on a phone right now.

As much as I am a gear whore, what really matters is picture content. I've heard it said that the world doesnt need another technically perfect image, it needs images with soul. And I totally agree with that sentiment, I've heard Jay Maisel say that he doesn't care about pixel quality, he cares about picture quality. Same idea, and when non photographers look at a photograph they see the image, not the technical details.

I'm not a pixel peeper, but I do make some comparisons at pixel level and test things against each other, just to make a decision on the better choice of equipment or technique. But for me it ends there, I prefer to use my gear rather than endlessly test it.

And no matter what gear we use, there is always something better out there, or about to come along, and we just need to get on with what we have with us at the time.

Thanks, going to see if I can get the Marumi ones.
