Am I going to have problems or will it work?

Its a 24-70mm f2.8 and 17-40mm f4 canon which I want to use with a Cokin P-Type adaptor and filters. The chappy in the shop seemed to thing i'll get light leak using the 85mm and needed to go upto 100mm.

You *might* have a problem on the wide end of the 17-40mm depending on whether you're using a full frame or a crop sensor body.

I use Cokin P and 85mm NDs & ND Grads on my 77mm filter lenses (Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR and Nikon 300mm f/4 AF-S). With the 70-200mm & 300mm it's not an issue at all, works flawlessly.

With the 10-20mm, I can't shoot wider than 14mm before I start to see the filter holder in my viewfinder (although I'm using a regular holder, not the WA one). On a full frame lens, I believe you start seeing a regular Cokin P holder at around 18-20mm.

They can be a little prone to flare in some cases if the sun can catch the edge of the filters (basically you start getting internal reflections inside the filter itself), but there are hoods that go into the end of the Cokin holders to help with this (similar to matte boxes you see on movie cameras). You can cover exposed ends with gaffer tape, or make your own French Flag type shade out of cardboard, like they use on video cameras.

So far my Cokin P investment is relatively small (about 60 quid total for the holder, 77mm adapter, 3 stop ND Grad and 3 stop ND), and it does have its issues on very wide larger diameter lenses that I've seen. It's far from useless, but I do intend to pick up the X-Pro Holder & 100mm filters at some point in the future for use on the 10-20mm.

As I said, on the 70-200mm and 300mm lens, no problems whatsoever.

You'll be fine - if shooting full frame, the 17mm will vignette with the filter holder in the frame up to around 20-21mm.

OK cool. I bought the Lee filter holder today but couldn't really afford it.

Shooting a 5D full frame!

I'll take it back tommorow and just buy the 85mm filters instead. If i get vignette at 17mm I'll just get the p-type holder for single filters...I'm assuming this will fix the problem.

No, it won't. For 17mm you'll definately need to use a Lee Wide Angle SWA ring. Even the single slot will vignette.

I moved to Lee myself last year so I could use my 16-35mm without problems.

Yeah, the wide angle adapter is basically the same as a regular holder except that it only holds a single filter, not three (you can get the same effect by just hacksawing off 2 of the slots in a regular holder).

But, that pretty much only makes it useful for ND grad filters. Anything else and you might as well just get a screw on. :)

What'd you pay for the Lee holder? Surely there's a much cheaper 100mm alternative on Fleabay?

I think Hitech do one, as do Cokin - its either Cokin "X" fit or "Z". Think its X but not sure... The holders are not that much cheaper than Lee.. its the Grads and Pols that are pricey. The holders are cheap to suck you in

Quite alot of cash. Around £45. The Hi-Tech holder wasn't that much cheaper than the Lee one, and the Cokin one is more expensife. I'm using hi-tech filters though.
