A couple of questions

Hi all,

I'm hoping to buy the Canon HF200 camcorder in the near future and have a few questions.

1. I have seen a shop on ebay (digigood) selling the camera along with an 8gb SDHC memory card for a fraction under £400, yet elsewhere it is going for £500+.
This company only offers a 90 day warranty however after emailing them they offered to extend the warranty to 12 months, however it apparently doesnt include a manufacturers warranty so is simply a warranty of their own making. They are a USA import company with their stock in the UK ready for dispatch, however it means the camcorder is the Vixia model (US version) rather than the Legria (UK version). They did state that it comes with the necessary power adapters though.

I never really like the idea of imports cause I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing that my product is from this country, with proper a manufacturer warranty. I really believe that 'you get what you pay for' so am worried as to whether or not I might have any trouble with an import. However, the company in question has over 100,000 (yes one hundred thousand) feedback, at 97% so would it be a risk worth taking?

2. Does very high altitude (particularly the cold at such altitudes) have a huge effect on battery life?

Thanks in advance

Anyone?!

More interested in an answer to the second question really.

q1 - it's a bit risky really as it infringes your statitory rights that you're buying a new piece of kit that doesn't have the standard 12 month warranty.

q2 - theoretically yes, though I'm speaking generally. When you have pencil batteries, if you warm them slightly when seemily dead, they'll have some charge. A battery for an electric wheelchair will last longer when it's warm compaired to when it's cold.

The rules state you are supposed to wait 24 hours before bumping a topic. Just so you don't get in trouble. :)

First question is a matter of personal preference really. If you are prepared to take it with the risk of perhaps not getting brilliant service should you require to have it fixed for any reason then go for it. I personally don't use eBay at all for anything like this. I stick to reputable retailers and forums such as this which have good classifieds.

Second question is simpler really. The cold will pretty much always affect a battery and it's life in a negative way. Try and keep either spare battries on yourself in a pocket close to your body or generally try ad keep the camera itself warm. Batteries tend to lose 20-50% worth of charge in cold weather depending who you speak to.

batteries do not like the cold and its advised to keep spares in an inner pocket so they are kept warm by body temperature.

A warranty is only as good as the paper its written on. The camera should come with a warranty valid in the sales region it was first sold in, and you'll either have to send things back to the US for repair - or stump up the repair cost in the UK. If they are putting their own warranty on it they'll probably pay to have it repaired on the basis that a small quantity of sales will need a warranty claim, but who is to say they won't be about in 10 months time?

Thanks for the replies, sorry I wasn't aware about the 24hr between bumps rule!

1. I think I'm going to get it from Jessops then as I would rather that for the peace of mind.

2. About the cold, I'm talking up to a height of 19,000 feet here so temperatures will be dipping down to -12(ish) Centigrade at times. Is it best just to buy a load of batteries and charge them all, then keep the ones that im not using very close to my body and just hope for the best?
