Here's an interesting story that popped up in my Apple New today.

A computer algorithm can tell if a person is gay or straight simply by scanning a picture of their face, researchers have shown. Artificial intelligence software developed at the University of Stanford can predict a person’s sexuality with far more accuracy than humans.

The algorithm was able to tell if a man is gay or straight using one picture 81pc of the time, and could determine a woman’s sexuality 74pc of the time. Humans were much less accurate in comparison, correctly guessing just 61pc of the time for men and 54pc for women.

I can imagine it being of concern to those who hide their homosexuality in countries where they suffer persecution.

Firstly, what a stupid waste of time.

Secondly, what a con, you could get it right >95% of the time by saying straight to everyone (if you believe the demographic research).

Have to agree, I honestly thought we were past the point of caring about anyone's sexuality, or was there some other reason for this research. I would suggest if you asked the person you'd get a truthful answer with greater accuracy.
Where someone's sexuality is a reason for persecution perhaps the money would have been better spent on education.

And some one ( some people ) got paid a lot of money for that research no doubt.
So not only is big brother watching you he's now categorising you too.
What ever next ?

Well, I think you're on the right track there. If anyone thinks it's a waste of money they are probably living in a fool's paradise. This is US research and probably financed by a 3 letter agency with a view to recognising those they consider a threat to the state, socialists ("commies" as they say), and so on. Not saying gays are a threat but that would be an obvious control group who would reliably self identify.

I thought it was one in three nowadays or is that just around here ;)

Probably politically incorrect to ask but

I wonder why there are far more LGBTQ plus 57 other variations used nowadays to only 40 years ago

Are the numbers the same but they used to keep quiet about there sexual orientation or has something happened or been introduced to rapidly increase the numbers, (Not saying its wrong) just wondering.

Would something be done if it started to affect the Survivability of the Human Race ? if for example it was found that a chemical unborn babies were exposed to made them more likely to be LGBTQ etc would it be wrong if they decided to ban such a chemical ?

Tin Hat on :exit:

My guess would be that it is far more innocuous and lucrative than that, they will license it to Google/Facebook/Twitter/etc. who will use it to target advertising

I'm guessing that the "Gay / homosexual" catch all was inappropriate for the "Splinter groups"
Well you know how fashionable it is to give everyone a label,
from Mods and rockers to Chavs and hipsters.

Good point Chris but I'm wondering how ( or what with) you would target say a gay male audience to a straight male audience?

I blame it on vaccinations I've done my research :D :D

That causes massive intolerances and allergies to food additives, and yes I have done my research.
And lived the nightmare for nearly 16 years with a child.

Oh and he's "straight as a die" so I call bull on your research :p

No good asking me but I'm sure that there are advertisers that will pay to advertise to gay audience. It's probably more of a sales tool for social advertising than a really cost effective system but if one social media company says it can more specifically target the pink pound some advertisers will pay for that

I suppose the Gay audience would have more money to spend, until they are stupid enough to acquire children, through the usual channels, then it serves them right. ;) should have known when to recognise when they were well off, same with marriage why would they want to suffer that as well

Come on Chris, not an antivaxxer and a Climate change denier too.

Given that your appearance (sans surgery/make up etc) is genetically determined, does this "research" give credence to the idea that being gay/straight is also genetically determined?

If that comment was meant for me, you do realise my post was meant to be humorous, yeah?

Oh, and for the record, while genetics play an important role in how we look and behave, its not the only influencing factor.

What about the climate? it does change with the seasons that's proven do you deny it? :p

As for the MMR, I & my ex spent a lot of years on that, and found conclusive proof as to how it affects behaviour, linked, to allergies, following the attack and the response of the IgE's
Of course 25 plus years ago, it was never admitted, nor was the fact that "diet affects behaviour" But now of course that's another "Common knowledge" fact
Following several meetings at Chelsea and
Westminster, "we taught them some and they taught us some"
Back then it was also never admitted that MMR was a live vaccine, now its common knowledge..
Of course many people now opt for 3 separate inoculations, which is obviously less harmful, as there is minimal overload on the immune system,
back then of course it wasn't available.. Times change, sometimes for the better..

I looked @Cobra avatar and immediately though there is a man who likes pink snakes
I am a pink snake, so you were half right :D

For vast majority of people, vaccines do not cause any lasting harm. and the MMR does not overload the immune system.

Of course the WHO could just be a big Pharma shill

I can't comment on your personal situation and how vaccines have caused your childs problems, there are some who suffer adverse reactions to vaccines, there is no denying that but the chances of that happening are so much smaller than the risk to your health from catching the disease your being vaccinated against.

I could show you many research papers & quotes to prove totally the opposite, but all you would do is go find some more..
and I'd do the same .. I know the truth and tbh I really CBA to play ping pong with you ...

Oh and one last thing That's a USA "Statement" those tests would be run under the USP guidelines which is is far more Lax that the BP ..
How do I know? One researcher I worked with on QC for insulin, IF a batched failed, they would then dig out the USp, to see if it passed.
Which of course it invariably did...
Should I ever need it, I know which brand(s) of insulin to avoid ;)

What is the point behind spending vast amounts of time and money other than to " out" those that have the right for their life to be private?

I d be interested to know which brands to avoid, my son has type 1.

I suspect because you can. Someone wanted to find a dataset to test their AI system and as an academic exercise it worked. I suspect this won't be the last time where AI combined with social media result have 'interesting' social consequences. Hopefully this won't end up and a useable tool that some unpleasant government can use on there own citizens.

As history seems to be repeating itself in many countries I can't see anything positive coming out of this.

Back to the gay ai, what a waste of time, just walk into a primary school playground. "You're gay, no you're gay" [emoji2]

Curiously, and baring in mind this was many years ago, I've just done a search and either the company no longer exists or its changed its name!
So hopefully if the latter they have "smartened up their act" ;)

As a data nerd I think this is really interesting - looking at a picture and trying to classify what it is is pretty hard (e.g. identify a face vs things that humans reocgnise as face-like), but to pick up on certain nuances is really interesting.

I must admit I'm surprised at the specifics. Something like identifying different species of birds would have been a less controversial subject matter

Because there's (thankfully) much more openness and acceptance of people that don't fit with traditional gender norms than 40 years ago, so less people feel they have to live their lives hiding their true nature.

I know someone that got kicked out of her father's home at 16 when she came out as a lesbian, and that was in the early 1990s (they have since reconciled), is it any wonder that many people would hide what they are?
