Yes
Just started to get into photography but having to use my laptop (OH commanders the PC!) My monitor is too dark if tilted too far away from me; too bright if it is at 90 degress - how do I know I am seeing my images the same way as others are? Is there a way to determine when it is "correct"? Or am I just using the wrong tool for the job and need to invest in a better monitor (or kick OH off the PC)? And no, I can't afford a MAC.

Sorry - I did warn you it was a stupid question!

What makes you think it is too bright. Laptop screens don't normally kick out lots of light as they are designed to be used on batteries. If it is too bright, then there's normally a combination of keys that will alter the brightness of the backlighting to give you more or less light output.

Getting the correct look isn't just about displaying blacks/whites right, but also displaying colours in their right place too. The only real option is to calibrate your screen. I'd suggest the Eye One Display LT. Can be had for less than £90 and really makes a big difference to the colour rendition.

The correct angle for a laptop screen is where you are looking straight at it. It's a function of these types of screens that they darken when you are not viewing them straight on.

If the screen is too bright, there is usually a brightness control somewhere. Possibly on of the "F" keys doubles as this .My Compaq uses the F8 and F7 keys in combination with the alt key to adjust display brightness.

And you get the same problem with Macbooks as well ! :)

Laptops screens aren't meant to be used at much of an angle. Unless you look at them fairly straight on then they will be dark.

Try turning the brightness up and then find a monitor calibration chart on the Internet and adjust the settings for your graphics card.

Thank you everyone! My son has hooked my lap top up to a larger monitor and I've managed to adjust the brightness and contrast using the link Peter gave - I'm much happier now except the mointor can't be moved off the dinning room table as easily as just the lap top!
