Seeing as I'm a little bored, here's a little guide to help you get the most out of your Gmail account.

Part 1

The first part of this guide will help keep your inbox tidy and sort mail from your various contacts as and when it's recieved

First, login to Gmail. When you are logged in, click "settings" from the top of the page. From here you can manage how your mail is handled.

On the orange tab, click labels. If you regularly receive mail from certain people, you can automatically sort mail from those people into individual folders, so think of labels as subfolders from your main inbox.

In the "Create new label" box, type the name of the contact or subject you wish to create. For example it could be a persons name, or something more general like "Purchases" for any online purchases you make, "Registrations" for any forum registration emails you recieve with usernames/passwords and so on.

Once you have created the label, you can apply a filter. So back on the orange "settings" tab, click filters and then click "create a new filter"

Filters can be based on the sender's email address, or based on subject line, or even content from the message itself. For now we will concentrate on the sender's email address, so type the full address in the "From" box - eg test@test.com. From here, click "Next step".

If you wish to automatically sort the incoming mail into a subfolder, click "Skip the inbox" and also tick "Apply the label" and from the drop down menu, select the label you just created. Any mail you recieve from that address will now automatically be sent into the subfolder label you created.

Cunning eh?

The only downside to doing this is that incoming mail from that address will no longer show up in your task tray, assuming you use the Gmail notifier.

Repeat the above steps for any other incoming email you wish to sort. Doing this keeps your inbox less cluttered and easier to find stuff you want.

Please note that you can currently apply only 20 filters to incoming mail.

If you have created labels for online purchases and registrations as I gave an example of above, you cannot predict the senders address so you have to do these by hand.

Back in the inbox, select the messages you want to sort by ticking the box to the left. From the "More actions" blue menu, select the appropriate label.

This will label the messages with the grouping you set up and the messages will be highlighted in yellow. Then just click "archive" and the messages will be moved out of the inbox and into the relevant subfolder.

Part 2

The second part to this guide is integrating Gmail with your google calender. Google calender is a relatively new feature and provides a calender and event planning function to Gmail.

To access the calender, the url is http://www.google.com/calendar

To add a new event, for example a family BBQ, click "Add Event". You will then need to give the event a title, and set the time and date. Leave the event private unless you want the whole world to see it!

On the right hand side menu, you can add friends and family email addresses and send them an invite to the event. The email they recieve will have a link they can click on to either accept or decline the invitation. Pretty cool huh?
Part 3

Using Gmail to store files. Gmail currently gives you nearly 3Gb of storage and this is increasing daily. While you cannot upload files directly, it is possible to email yourself files with attachments upto 10Mb in size so that you can access them from wherever in the world you are (providing you have web access and a computer obviously!)

That's about it for now, I hope this has helped a few people get a little more from their gmail account.
