Just -after a bit of advice now as i have a while to plan this, i saw a piece in my local paper last week inviting 366 amateur photographers to spend a day in Wakefield Cathedral with free reign to document the day, as they are closing the Nave for the first time in its history for some renovation work. I think this is a bit of a unique opportunity and want to make the best of it, and have had confirmation that i can have a day.

I currently have a 40D although hopefully in the New Year i will be upgrading to the 7D, i also have a Sigma 10 - 20 which i will probably use for architectual shots, and a 100mm 2.8mm Macro for some candids, and my Nifty Fifty i will be allowed to use my tripod, would an off camera flash be usefull? or would you stick to using the tripod and opening the aperture up?

Thoughts please i don't want to waste what could be a great opportunity

366 photographers in one shot? That is going to be one very busy building......

I wouldn't necessarily open the aperture up when using the tripod; it's going to be static so you can close down for sharpness and use a long exposure. A remote release and mirror lock-up might be useful though.

I'd take all that gear but don't set out to use it all - just go with the flow really, seeing how the busy environment affects your decision making. The Sigma will definitely help get some impacting shots, especially pointed upwards to shoot the roof if it's interesting...

Thanks, That was my original thought, and no it's 366 days with each photographer getting their own day to document :):)

Phew, that makes more sense

It sounds like a really interesting prospect. What about documenting the renovation, i./e. the people doing the renovation and maybe the clergy who work and oversee the cathedral. Would make a great documentary project....

I think thats the idea, the website is here,

I have asked for the 29th January as i would like to get in before the nave is closed, its actually a lovely building and i will enjoy photographing inside, they have requested that if people are to be the main focus of the photograph that permission is sort first, and to respect the fact that some people are there for different reasons, but i can work within those constraints

Yep, just had a butchers - this the main gubbins that most photographers would be most interested in:

BTW, it says you can bring a flash but stands aren't allowed, as aren't studio heads. Doesn't say anything about putting and off-camera flash on a tripod... ;)

It sounds really interesting so will submit a date because it sounds like something I'd like to add to my portfolio :)

i read all that, and am happy to comply, am not pro and don't ever intend to sell anything so makes no odds to me, its just the opportunity to get involved in something in my town, and get the opportunity to photograph a really lovely building properly:)

Thank you Liz for posting the link!

Seems like a fantastic opportunity, and I will definately be submitting a date to go and do this :)

Are there any parts of the Cathedral you would suggest definately seeing? As they recommend confirming with them if you want access to any specific parts of the Cathedral.

I haven't been in for a while, so no, will have to go and have a butchers first, for me personally the high bits, bell tower and spire,:):)

You would be wise to ask if they allow tripods, a lot of churches and cathedrals dont.

Just a heads up :D

They do, its in the terms and conditions, just no light stands and lighting etc, its the Deans idea who is a keen photographer himself

I've teamed it with visiting my folk over near Hull - they can spend some time with the nipper while I do some photography. Thought May would bring some better light for internal shots (my D2x isn't great at really high ISOs) but the sculpture park sound a good idea too - haven't been there for donkey's years :)

Welcome! Between 1st January - 31st December 2012 Wakefield Cathedral is inviting the people of Yorkshire to volunteer for a special community photographic project:

I'm assuming that an exiled east ender such as myself doesn't quite fit that description. Did think about having a go, have to visit York for work purposes and could have perhaps sorted something out, only fair really though to let locals get involved

its been running for a while, they would probably like to see photographs from an outsiders perspective;) i know they've posted it on the Leeds Flickr group as well as Wakefield
