Advice on kit?

Hi.

Someone very kind has just bought me a Nikon D3000 with 18-55 kit and as I'm new to photography (although enthusiastic :D) I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers on what other lenses etc might be helpful to aid my new hobby!

Quite fancy a bit of macro and I'm always taking pics of my daughter so people too. Not really into landscapes or sporty things. V small budget though unfortunately. :'(

Can anyone advice me and also let me know if the Tamron 70-300mm is any good please?

Thank you :)

I don't think that Tamron is what you're looking for at all. It's a long telephoto zoom for sport and action photography, for pulling in distant subjects, maybe a bit of wildlife. For what you have said you want to shoot, general stuff and portraits, your kit lens is perfect.

For macro stuff, I think a Raynox DCR-250 is a good option. Cheap and very easy to use - it just clips to the front of your kit zoom. Under £40 here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Raynox-RADCR-0250-DCR-250/dp/B000A1SZ2Y/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt Check out these pictures taken with it http://www.flickr.com/groups/raynoxdcr250/ If you don't want to go quite that close, go for the less strong DCR-150 version.

Thanks for the replies. Took my camera to the zoo today and found it quite frustrating not being able to reach most of the animals with my lens so think I may buy the tamron.

Anyone know the best price?

50mm looks good so will probably ask for it for xmas (as I have been promised one as a present). :D

I had both lenses, Tamron and Sigma, I found Sigma better, it was faster and more solid, maybe you should read some reviews, it's definitely good lens for the price.

Hi - this is my first post - I am quite new to DSLR photography and in the same situation as mi55pink. I am looking to do some macro photography - having read your comments I assume the raynoxdcr250 is compatible with the Nikon D3000. Is it a stand alone lens or do I have to use it with another, I have a 55mm - 200mm lens - will it give me good close ups combined with that? How do I know if a lens is compatible? - Sorry I have so many unanswered questions. I hope someone can help.

The raynox is a dioptra lens (like a glasses lens) that attaches to the front of a camera lens and increases the magnification by 2.5x DCR250. It can be attached to any lens where the filter screw is within the size in the specs for the DCR kit that you buy. So for example it might say 52-65mm on it so that would attach to the 18-55 kit lens which has a 52mm thread or the AF50mm f1.8 with its 52mm or something like the AFS105mmf2.8 with it's 62mm filter size.

Thank you very much Cowasaki - just the info I needed - Look out creepy crawlies here I come :)
