Thinking about getting up early tomorrow and going and taking my first sunrise.

Can anyone give any tips or advice as to the settings I should use on a 400D with a 17-85 lens?

Is it better to just stick it at almost infinity f16 and apature priority or is it better to use manual settings.

Cheers in advance

Jeez, how longs a piece of string? ;)

I would have thought any sunrise/sunset is about location, location, location.

Assuming you find a good spot and assuming you can actually see the sunrise
through our usual covering of heavy cloud then you can start to think about
F stops and such.

If you're after a colourful sky then a wide angle and close the apperture down.
A telephoto will give you a nice large sun.

I dont think there are any hard and fast rules, just try as many different settings
as you can, after all, you're only using memory..

Good luck with it

Do you know exactly where you are going to go and from which direction the sun will rise - if it does without hiding behind a shield of gray? Get there an hour beforehand, set the camera and tripod up facing the right direction and see if there is anything that will make a good sillouette in the pre-dawn light.

Bracket all your shots. I'd use manual and try a variety of aperture settings and make sure I had some really long exposures as well . The light from these can be very interesting to say the least. Have a look at some of Edinburgh Gary and petemc's work if you want a few ideas.

Cranky, I am fairly new to all this to and the best advice I can give would be to use whichever mode you are more comfortable with, I use both Av and Manual mode when shooting landscapes. The light changes so rapidly I think you'll be disappointed if you're using a mode that you're new to and find yourself messing around with controls that don't come as second nature.

Have you got a location in mind yet? Have a think tonight about what you're trying to capture, it'll make things easier when blurry eyed in the morning

Remember your grad filters and pack your bag tonight so you're not running around like a lunatic in the morning! Oh and take a flask of hot tea, if it's anything like the mornings I have been out on recently you'll be grateful for it as you're waiting for the light!

Of course this might all be normal to you - I'm still getting used to it LOL

Thanks for the advice, as far as location goes i'm thinking mow cop:

Its the highest place I can think of, only problem is I don't think its going to be possible to get the foley itself in as its actually right at the top of the hill.

Just going to look at Gary's and Petes work now

Sunrise, sunsets are generally made by being of something OTHER than the sun....use it to give lighting to whatever, but a ball of orange on its own is generally pretty boring - and usually lost in the distance.

It is the light at sunrise that is useful...try turning your back on it, or to a side, and look at how it is illuminating something else.

Will do, alarm set for 6 o'clock :(
