Hi all,
I am new to this forum and I am really hoping that you can help with some advice. I am about to upgrade my camera to a Canon SLR, and would like the advice on the best. I realise the 1D and 5D's offer superb features, but I feel that the price is out of my reach with the lenses as well. I work in Africa and I am surrounded by game, I therefore need a good zoom, wide angle and a 18-55mm or equivalent. None of the lenses that I have now are going to fit the new camera, but I would love advice on the best camera for wildlife photography - day and night shots, with action (I hope!).

Many thanks
L

Best advise is to get into Jessops and have a play. You are in a position where you will start from scratch when considering your system. It may be that Nikon feels better than Canon for you. I think that Canon lens's tend to be a bit cheaper in comparison though.

Do Jessops have branches in Africa then?

No Jessops out here, but then I am in the middle of the African Bush so nothing except animals! I will be buying the camera in the UK so Jessops is a good call, I just wanted some advice before I go into the shop, so thank you!

I would say a 40D would be a good choice if you can still get one. Jessops have run out i believe as it is discontinued.

What budget are you looking at for the camera body upgrade and lenses?

A cropped sensor camera is better for wildlife, but you lose width on the wide angle perspective. Nikon and Canon both have good offerings with camera bodies and large selection of lenses compared the other manufactures. All the canon bodies are compatible with their EF lenses, only the cropped sensor camera's (xxxD or xxD) work with the EF-S lenses, If I was to get a Nikon, I would go for the D70s, D80 or D90 models, the D40 - D60 models are limiting as to which lenses to use, no focus motor built into the camera body.

As for a lens, you in the middle of Africa, light conditions are perfect, no light polutions, haze etc, so you could look at the sigma 50-500mm. Depends how close you can get to the action or the canon 100-400mm. Otherwise you could be looking at the long primes and lots of $$$$.

Best advice to find a good camera shop and try things out, you'll be amazed how many people change their mind when trying out different camera. It happened to me when I bought mine, bought a different camera to the one I went into the shop to buy.

I agree! The 40D is a cropped sensor so really good for wild life. The Sigma 120-400mm or the 150-500mm (if you don't mind the weight) would be ideal for that application.
