AF motor: Body + Lens

hi all

if I'm using a body with an AF motor and a lens with an AF motor, which motor takes priority (if at all?)

so for example, if I'd treated myself to a shiny new d7000 or d3 (I haven't, I wish!) with a super-efficient AF motor... then put an old AF lens on the end... am I wasting the 'better' capabilities of the motor in the camera body?

The lens motor always take priority, but the lens motors are better, even with a D3s.

Older AF lenses dont have motors, only AF-S leses have motors, or sigma's HSM etc and they are faster than the in body motor.

I was thinking about the Tamron 17-50 2.8 eventually for my D3100, but i'd need the model with AF on the lens because of my cameras lack of AF motor. But i'd read that the AF is on the slower side on that lens.

So 'hypothetically' would say a D90 with the non-AF motor version focus faster than the AF-motor version on my D3100?

I presume this question is valid for all bodies with AF motors?

And are the AF motors quicker on some cameras as opposed to others?

Also, i'd read that the AF-ring turns on the Tamron when it auto-focuses, is this the same on bodies with an AF motor or is that done internally somehow?

I dont really know Tamron's motors, having only used 1 tamron lens, but I would imagine if the lens with the AF motor is being classed as slow, then a D90 with a non AF motored lens might be faster.. That's pure conjecture though, I really don't know.

Cameras like the D700, D3 etc have beefier motors than say a D90, but It doesnt make a massive amount of difference. We'd be talking milliseconds to a second worth if difference.

The focus ring turning depends on the lens I think. Some do, some dont. All Nikon AF-S lenses do not turn when autofocused. I only have one AF lens and that does turn when autofocusing. I honestly cant remember about the other lenses I have had whether the rings turned or not.

Thanks Tom..... one of those bits of info I think I need to know..... not that i'm thinking of cashing in the D3100 just yet!
