AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR announced

Look forward to seeing a few reviews, could be great edc lens

I wonder how quickly you'll lose that 2.8? As soon as you twist the zoom ring I imagine?

About time it was updated, the previous one was starting to look decidedly slow...

It is, it's the 24-120 which is basically the same idea...

I get the impression that the latest 24-120 is not that sharp, so many people getting it as a kit lens seem to be unloading it asap.

I haven't used it so can't comment on that, it does review pretty well though, and I've never heard serious complaints. Much better than the old variable aperture 24-120.

The reason people on here are unloading them is you get such a good price on D750 and 24-120 that it makes alot of sense to buy it, split the kit, sell the 24-120 and then get your D750 for less than a body only one.

+1 to the post from stumeech above. The 24-120 is optically a really good lens. Most peiple are selling either to raise a bit of money towards the D750 or because they prefer the f2.8 or faster short FL lenses. Personally, I think the 24-120 is a fantastic, versatile travel lens.

These are interesting comments. I would find the 24-120 very useful, particularly around the £400 mark. I have just shied away as I felt that kit buyers were trying it, not liking it and punting it on. I have the old 24-120D and although it is an extremely well made lens (Japan, mine dates from 1999), it is not very sharp, mind you it was not designed for a D750!!!

I have just sold my D750 with 50mm 1.8g and some other older lenses to re-buy the D750 with the 24-120 as it works out a lot cheaper buying as a kit. I should have done it first time round.

Currently, if buying from HK as a kit and you then sell the lens on, you are having the body for around £900.

Certainly makes the current £700+ UK price for this lens look pretty expensive!

Most people seem to have caught on to this now and the used value of the 24-120 f/4 has plummeted as a result. A guy local to me is trying to shift 2 of them at the moment has dropped the price on them to £350 and still can't shift them.

I'm buying mine to keep, I have arm/hand problems so hoping the VR will help me a little. Was going to get the 24-85, but I thought the constant f4 and extra reach may come in useful. Just waiting for the BACS payment to come through for my gear.

The price of the D750 has seems to come down a bit over the last few weeks. I bought my first one before Christmas (faulty vf) and I think it was £1228???, my last one about 8 weeks ago for £1168. Thay are now down to £995.

As with Simon, I got mine with the kit and this is a keeper lens for me. I was quite surprised what a small, compact lens the 24-120f4 is. Should make it very useable, Simon,

The compact size makes it even more appealing I might add.

Wish it were FX! :-(
Would make a great landscape walkabout if it was, 24mm's not wide enough for some of my landscape shots which is why I've never seriously looked at the 24-120mm.

Yeah, would imagine it reaches f4 pretty quickly.

Ouch! Has he still got one left? Might be tempted myself if you could PM me.

Anyone seen any proper reviews of this lens yet?

It just seems so overpriced to me but then Nikon has in the past done this at launch then 3 months in it drops around 25% I think I'd rather have a tamron 17-50 2.8 and spend the rest on another lens even the 24-120 f4 and still have change at current prices, or 12-24 f4 with 24-120f4 to cover larger range and again have change if buying used

this is one of handful of high end (hopefully!) dx lens around so i see where a higher price comes from but if you look at the one its replacing that's dropped down massively in price so i think you are probably correct in that assessment. Personally i would rather have the smaller and lighter designed for dx lens rather that using the ff on a dx camera

That's why I didn't quote the 17-55 as that's a buoy, the 24-120 really isn't that heavy and an absolute steal at current prices I'm not sure people are even tring them just thinking they are no good and wanting pro 2.8 to be happy?

I should have also said that I'm sure most would want the 2.8 at the longer end reach unless someone is doing some wide angle in doors work not sure 2.8 at 16mm is that helpful?

you could well be correct, if it was a bit wider at that end it would be a great dx walkabout lens out of interest any idea how well it compares against canons 24-105L F4?

I don't sorry don't get me wrong I'm sure at some point if I end up getting rid of my full frame body and only keep the d7200 and it drops or comes up at a good 2nd hand price I'd never say never it just seems to be more a marketing gimmick saying its 2.8 ex lens that's lightweight etc but in reality most of the time I'm. Sure people will be using it in the ranges where it's nearly F4 anyway

I think they should have made it a constant aperture lens. The 17-55 is a stunner of a lens providing you don't shoot into the sun with it. A real quality lens with a good range for DX. It's twice the weight though but at £400 used it's a bargain imo.

Currently £679.00 grey and £869 from Jessops

While fixed aperture would be a bonus tbh double the weight would make it a no go for me. As its designed as an upgrade for the older 85 version I think the balance of weight and features is good but yep its pricey! The optical quality needs to be very good

For a lightweight walkabout lens I think f4 is OK, as long as the vr is good if it was a more specialist lens I'd agree that it would be limited

I've always found Nikons VR to be pretty poor tbh. Maybe their new incarnation will be better.
thats a bugger
hopefully they have it nailed this time around, I look forward to the reviews on this lens if they have it right and the price stabilizes i think it could be a winner
