Affinity Eraser Tool

I'm trying to use this, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. When I click and drag, it leaves a red trail, which quickly disappears, but the object I'm trying to erase is still there. I watched a youtube video, but that seems to tell me what I'm already doing.
These are the settings I'm using.

Hi Marc, I still use V2, I'm guessing this is the new version as the screenshot looks different to what I'd see?

Just to check, have you got the image layer selected?
Does controller offer current layer or current layer and below?
If a mask layer has been created, is it switched to visible?

I think so. I've tried it on the original image as well

Don't feel bad

Many do the same thing, same as saying the adjustments do nothing when the wrong layer is selected, but soon get used to checking when things don't work as suspected.

Been using Photoshop for so long. it's the small differences that get ya!

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd ask in this one.

When I first downloaded Affinity, I could toggle Preview Mode using ^W or via the View menu. This no longer seems to work, and I'm stuck in Preview Mode. I've tried with both .af and .psd files.
