After my first DSLR

I'm after a decent camera but as a beginner, can't justify the £400+ that a new, up to date Canon or equivalent would cost.

The camera will mostly be used for portraits and for taking pictures of my cars. What I miss on my existing digital compact (and obviously on my phone's camera) is the ability to set aperture priority for shots to give a shallow depth of field.

Ideally I'd like to spend no more than £200 so I'm looking for advice on where to buy. I posted on one of my car forums and was directed here as apparently you have a For Sale section. Until now I've been keeping an eye on eBay but am always a bit wary buying (reasonably expensive) gadgetry on there. I also posted in this site's Welcome section but was told I'd get more "action" here ... ;)

I've been looking at Canon 350Ds but am open to other suggestions.

Any tips and advice gratefully received ...

Thanks, but that one looks to be body only. I'm really intent on getting a complete kit for sub £200 ...

20d go for about £200, but I think that's normally without kit lens \ memory card etc.

I know someone who has a 300d and is still happy with it, sure the 350d would fit your needs.

You'll need a lens and the 50mm f1.8 can be had for about £70 and should be good for portraits -I'd factor this into your budget.

Have you considered a compact? The canon G range have aperture priority I belive, the new G10\11 will be too expensive, but maybe a second hand G9\7 may do? I've tried none of these FYI but just a thought...may not get you the DOF you are looking for though, if that is what you are looking for?

Good luck

Al

nikon d40, now discontinued, but they were being sold for 250 new. might still be able to pick one up somewhere new or second hand cheaper. comes with an 18-55mm kit lens and is definitely a good camera to start of with
