Hi all,

I've been here on the forums for some time and I'm always on the look out to improve my photos, technique or gear.

This year I seem to be stepping out of my comfort zone a bit more, doing a bit more wildlife and portrait photography and some weddings too....on top of the landscapes and plane photography I already do alot of...

Now with this context - I've currently got a 5D mk ii and I need a second body. Now I'm torn - do I get a Canon 7D or part exchange some gear I think I can do without and go for a Canon 5D mark III?

Given I'm already lucky enough to have a FF camera - would having a crop body given me more flexibility or am I better off taking the leap and going for the mk III and it being more "future proof"? I don't normally do posts like this as I normally know my own mind but this time I'm genuinely unsure which way to go...

I'm really torn and I would appreciate some opinions on this.....

I think it really comes down to whether you want the crop of the 7d for wildlife and plane photography ? Otherwise the 5d3 is the better choice if the price is OK ?
 
As much as I love my 5D3 in your shoes doing plane and wildlife photography I'd go for the 7D, or maybe a 1D3, to give you faster AF and higher frame rate than the 5D2 and also a second body for your weddings. Either body will give you a bit more reach out of your lenses for the wildlife and planes too. A 1D3 would be my choice to give you better weathersealing for outside stuff and dual slots for your wedding work.
 
Both - thank you - that's been guiding my thinking to be honest - a backup body but something that gives me a bit more reach too.

What I do know is that the Mk ii isn't suddenly a bad camera with the Mk iii around but I do find I hit the limits on it in certain situations - certainly find the AF 'slow' with planes at times and I have missed that little bit of extra 'reach'...but the Mk iii looks so nice too hence my question :)
