Alamy - Picture numbers are dropping?

When I got accepted on Alamy last week there was 16.33 million pics on their site, or so they said. This increased to 16.34 (Must have been after I added my extensive library!!) This figure is now dropping and is now at 16.27 million.

I found this a little odd - So are people taking their pics elsewhere? Is there someone out there benefitting from the drop in Alamy listings?

Getty recently ended their tie-up with Alamy and this resulted in a drop of a few hundred thousand images as Getty's were removed. Mind you, I thought that was done and dusted a few weeks ago so dunno why it's still dropping. Fingers crossed it continues to drop until only mine are left:naughty::nuts:

Surely numbers go up and down al the time as pics are added, and those with exclusive licences are sold?

Are Alamy still in the process of removing unauthorised NT pictures?

Be interested to know people's experiences with Alamy. How often do you get a purchase, and what kind of subjects do best?

I doubt people are going to tell you what subject for them does best. That would just be inviting more competion...

:D

Unless you've got LOADS of really good photos up, of things people want photos of, you're not going to be getting much of an income. I passed the QC process on my 3rd go a few months ago, no sale yet, but I only have 4 photos up so I'm not exactly surprised! :D

Edit: If you look here it shows what has been searched for the most, the higher the 'UCO' number, the more people have searched for it. Not exactly showing what sells well, but it shows what people are after at least!

Edit again: You can see what's sold on that link!

Yet another edit: you have to be a member of Alamy to see that link, sorry about that!

Well, I was hoping for some general comments at least. Just started reading Microstock Photography and was wondering if people's experiences equate with what Freer says. I'll present a summary of what he says when I've finished

Thanks Chris, that's what I was thinking. I'm getting the impression it would be a full-time job getting a portfolio that might make a return, and even then the return wouldn't be worth the effort. Hope one of those four brilliant images you have up there tempt someone, someday

EDIT:you need to sign in to get that info. I suppose I better register and get rejected.

Well I wouldn't say that, if you're looking at making a living, think thousands of really top quality images of things that people want to buy! I tried to get approved as a bit of a technical exercise, when I've got a bit more free time I may try putting a few more up!

The images only have to be technically good, they're inspected to check for dust, over-enlargement, poor processing etc. It doesn't have to be an interesting, sell-able photo, just meet the technical requirements!

To give you an idea, the most searched for terms in the last month are:

  1. Football
  2. Swine Flu
  3. iPhone
  4. Dog
  5. Family
  6. Wedding
  7. Facebook
  8. Garden
  9. Ghost
  10. Alamy

Not exactly the terms I was expecting actually: family, wedding, even football ok, but swine flu, iphone and ghost!

when you search on what photos sold last month it is no wonder I have not sold any!!

william henry harrison
moon landscape
man repairing
older couple
president james garfield
andrew jackson
eden project
grover cleveland
Henry VIII portrait
woman senior thinking
haringey london
hammer hitting thumb

I am thinking of getting the hammer out!!!

I'm sure I read on the Alamy forums that as a rough guide the average earning is about £1 (or was is $1?) per image per year...
