Hi guys
Doing a football tournie on Saturday from 11 till 6:thumbs: I have a Canon 500D but just with one battery:thumbsdown: , should I just buy another battery or should I buy another battery plus a grip?. is the grip really needed?, I could just change batteries when first one dies:shrug:.
 
I use gripped 500D with 2 third party batteries and 1 original Canon battery as a backup.This keeps me going more than a day.I like using a grip as it gives me more flexibility and comfort.If you are just going to use it for a day then maybe you can go for a third party battery only.
 
The only issue with changing when the battery dies is will you miss the shot of the day whilst changing batteries?
 
Don't get a grip just for batteries because it doesn't change anything. Get a grip if you are after better hand held and extra buttons for portrait shot.
And get a 3rd party grip not the canon one. Much cheaper(about £30 on ebay), the same good materials, just with out canon logo.

Ive got this one and Im very happy about it. Never had a problem with it.

Errr it does give you twice the life, which is what he's looking for... You'll probably find that OEM batteries will last longer than 3rd party units.

I would expect to take a LOT of shots during that time spell.How much memory have you got.There's no point buying extra batteries if you run out of memory before you need them.
The grip isn't a deal breaker.Some people like them,some don't.I would pick up another couple of batts though.You might not need them both but it's far better to have them and not use them than run out of juice halfway through the afternoon.

If you are 'doing' the tournament as proper sports or event photography then you're going to be taking roughly 150-300 pictures per half hour of play. Work out how much play time x number of exposures / shot capacity of your battery = how many extras you need. Have you got the facility to recharge on site? If so you only need one spare.

but how long does it take you to change a battery? 30sec. I doesn't really make any difference to me, changing the batteries or having them griped.
However im not doing any sort of fast photography so, maybe that's why it does not make any difference for me.
 
Grip is down to personal preference, it's just down to ergonomics.

I've had a camera with a built in grip, it's useful, but not going to be buying a grip for my current cameras. A spare battery fits in a pocket easily. I'd be more tempted to buy extra batteries and cards, than a grip and one extra battery.
 
jsut stock the batteries up if you are not used to the grip it might cause a headache it really does change the weight balanace and handeling charateristics of the camera. as mentioned make sure you have the memory space or able to dump to laptop between games (if there is time)
 
Turn the preview screen off, i.e so when you shoot it doesnt then appear on the screen. Just scan photos a load at a time when needed. The screen is the main drain on the battery.
