Alternative to Wimberley plamps?

As the title says really. Does anyone know of an alternative to the Wimberley plamps?

I'm looking to set a small studio to do some still life shots. The usual stuff like flowers, etc.. The plamps would be idea but I cannot find them for less than £30 in the UK.
 
Flower arranging wire or bonzai wire perhaps? :shrug:
 
It looks like one of those plastic snakes we used to have as kids.....:lol:

Bonzai Wire, as Grandteacha CT say.

I've been thinking of jerry rigging something, not got any ideas fixed in my head yet though. :(

I was think of something like the test tube holders you used to get in school, with a rigid vertical bar, with another with adjustable height, at 90 degree with some kind of clip on the end.

That is always going to help.

I did the opposite with my fathers flower colection. I'd water them in the morning, all being in a class house, and they would fry buy the afternoon. :eek::eek: Killed his whole collection. He was nt happy to say the least.

I've been thinking about them, but I cannot find them in Inverness. Well that's what you get for living so far north.

I'll have to have a browse on the internet.
 
I love those Chinese Elm trees, one of the easier ones to keep too, but they're only in a pot about an inch high. When it's really hot in summer you only have to miss watering one day and it's Goodnight Vienna. :gag:
 
I have two Sirissa`s (SP) left alive, seem quite "hard to kill", I christened one Bruce Willis.......:D

It was something to do with 6 pints of bitter I seem to recall,vaguely..........:D
 
The plamps actually use that coolant piping stuff but with Wimberley custom bits on each end. I'd love a cheaper solution but I haven't found one.

I'm learning this very quickly, thanks to krazy horse. I just don't now a way of connecting the clamps to the top and bottom.

When you solve it, please let me know!!! I think Plamps are two lengths of LocLine (so about 22 inches long) and the 3/8 not 1/4 inch stuff. When I looked at doing a copy, I decided it would cost as much as the Wimberley stuff. Done nothing about it yet but want some for the macro season next year.

I have that sinking feeling that by the time I buy all the components, it would come in at around the same cost as the plamps. I want 2 of them, one for the back ground one of the item I'm going to photograph.

That's £60 and I'm not really prepared to spent that.

I'll you know if I find the answer though.

That's exactly where I got. But I reckon I'll end up buying them. I also want 2, one for plant stem and one for reflector.

I think I might end up grumpy after this.

You're right about the exchange rate, I worked it out at about £24 before delivery from the states. :(

The only supplier i could find in the Uk is warehouse express. I'll give them a ring in the morning and see what they say.

I've just spoken to these people http://www.bobrigby.com/products.html and they said we could get a 10% discount if we order 10 or more as a group buy. But this would be negated by the time we redistribute amongest ourselves.

Hhhhhmm this is looking more of a challenge than I thought :(

I'm waiting on pricing information, but has anyone used this equipment?. If so what do you think of it?
 
It should be dead easy to make these, here is a rough sketch to show how it can be done:

The modular bits are obviously modular and come apart, hence their name. So you simply remove the end one, slide in a suitably sized bolt, and washer if necessary, then attach a clamp, and secure with a washer and nut.

The clamps range in size and strength, depending on what you want to clamp. The clamps can usually be sourced from your local market in a pack of 10 different sizes for a few quid.

Place the end module back, and Robert is your mother's brother.

All for less than a tenner, and can be completely customisable (is that a word?)

Hi Jonathan

What you're suggesting is what I've been thinking in creating one. what I need to do is find a good market with one of those tools stores with everything for a £1 or a £1 store, but the one in town has not got a huge range of tools :(

I've just seen this on flickr, not great but giving me a few ideas :)
 
2008 was a very long time ago, has anyone come up with a cheaper alternative to the PLAMP yet?
