I say Android, but with a couple of provisos..
I've never owned an iPhone, always been put off by the high price and the fact that everyone I know that has an iPhone is a compulsive upgrader to the next, latest version - this suggest to me that iPhones are either more addictive than crack or there's a gradual feature creap with each model being successively less poorly featured than the last - instead of coming right out with a fully featured model from the get-go.
Synching your diary with Outlook is straightforward - except under certain circumstances. I have a HTC Desire and I make a lot of use of repeating events and HTC/Android does not handle these well. It's very difficult to reschedule just one entry in a repeating sequence, and it's impossible to handle in any meaningful way any repeating event where the interval is greater than a month. I want to schedule a VAT reminder event every quarter, the HTC/Android diary system can not handle this at all, it blocks entire fortnights with reminders for this event, and in removing it from the calender it's buggered up Outlook and created an orphan reminder. As long as you know the limitations of the HTC/Android diary/scheduling system you can work round them, but it can be frustrating. And yes, I've tried multiple diary apps but the problem is a fundemental one in the way HTC Synch handles diary data.
The best phone I've ever had for synching was a Nokia N95 8Gb, it was also the best cameraphone. Unfortunately Nokia took their eye off the smartphone market and let the rest of the world pass them by.

Currently Apple win hands down with the price and spec of the Ipad 2.
Samsung are concerned about their planned pricing for the their Galaxy Tab 2 as well as the thinnesss of the ipad 2.
Motorola are looking to price themselves well out of the market with their Android tablet.

Nowt to say about phones as I stopped trying to sync with outlook a long time ago but just wanted to say that that is superb Julian!
I've moved to touchdown on my Desire due to the limitations of the HTC email/calendar etc. (I sync with Exchange)
Try setting up a google calender and sync this with the desire (works better with Android as you can view multiple calenders) and then use google calendar sync to sync with outlook.
Again that's the benefits of Android, you can choose

That a very bold statement to make.
Apple have dropped a bombshell with the spec and pricing of the Ipad 2.
See my post above about Samsung and Motorola Android based tabs.
I don't have the url to hand but a quick google and you will find what Samsungs CEO has recently said about the ipad2 vs the galaxy tab 2.
Technically, the Samsung Galaxy S was the best speced Android phone of 2010 and it's a cracking phone.
However, in their hurry to get the phone to market before Apple released the iphone 2, Samsung released the phone using a **** file system that causes lag.
The average owner of the phone wont really notice this but us geeks realised what a pain in the arse it is.
The advantage the Android platform has is that it's open source and there are some amazing developers out doing great things.
One of the developers over on XDA has been offered a job with Samsung and they are talking to another about also hiring him.
With a good custom ROM and Kernel, sat on a better file system and overclocked, the Galaxy S is awesome.
If a company like Nokia who had a huge market a major market share admit they made a major mistake, anything is possible.

The Atrix is a dual core processor so you can't really compare it to a Desire or Galaxy S.
The iphone 3 will more than like use a dual processor as well.
I can't see Apple releasing a dual core tablet and their next phone using a single core.

Syncing an iPhone with Outlook can be as simple as selecting 'Outlook' from a drop down menu in iTunes when you have the phone plugged into the PC.
Syncing with an Exchange server can be as simple as adding an account in the iPhone's settings and selecting Microsoft Exchange as the type. (of course you will need to know server name and your username and password).
I have no experience of Android and Outlook syncing though.

The iphone is fast becoming a superb mail tool. Synced with exchange 2010 it makes things for the end user very very easy.
Deutsche bank have just rolled it out to their users, we are doing so here, as are a number of large financials that I know. The ease of support and the fact that its more difficult to mess around with makes it (IMHO) the best choice.

Ipad 2 bombshell? The only bombshell is as usual it didn't deliver what people wanted, its a minor update, not a bombshell.
The Samsung Galaxy may have better features, but IMO the Desire is better and the current best selling smartphone.....

Samsung Tab - nothing special, Atrix is interesting, but not the best. LG with 3D - geeky/ineresting. Asus Transformer is the smartman's choice or hte Sony S1 when it comes (if it does what Sony are hinting at). The Asus Transformer will arrive in April at around £380 (wireless only version), that tablet has better specs than the Ipad 2 and more features.

Completely agree with this. Having one myself there is nothing in this that makes me want to upgrade. No-one I know is rushing to get one of these as an upgrade. It's certainly not a bombshell. It will be faster and have more memory. Whoppee!! Mine isnt exaclt yslow, and for what a tablet does it performs perfectly adequetly.
If apple could make more of them the iphone would be higher up that list.
Even now - you still need to make an appointment to purchase one at any london apple store. If you are lucky you can get an appointment, if not then tough. That drives people to buy other devices.

That's marketing. Its like the story that Apple have purchased all the components for making tablet screens, leaving less for android tablets and so they will sell less, but only because of apple.
Its all marketting BS, they are all at it. People complained of iphone 4 shortages on release or new customers getting priority. My friend was phoned by O2 on the day of the iphone4 release and offered an upgrade from his iphone 3. You can pick them up in various places. The appointment thing is to create sales, make it more exclusive.
I've also recently been offered an Iphone by vodafone business, but may actually be looking at a WinMo7 phone just to see what its like (already have the desire as my other phone and nothing else appeals)

The answer is no
The recent news about malicious apps on android really puts me off. The cost of an iphone puts me off. Winmo7 might be coming back into the running if it will offer the multi tasking via an update later in the year. I like that idea now I'm aware of it.

as another desireHD user i love it to bits. ref the battery life, yes it's a bit short, but because it's so good i use it more than any other phone! easily lasts over a day, and not an issue if you charge every night.
recently been on business in Singapore and flew Aberdeen-heathrow-singapore. Internet,calls between flights, and MP3 in flight. Over 24hrs traveling and i still had plenty texting, calls in singapore before it needed charging.
Ref the speaker, i downloaded poweramp. This app is a pretty competent music player with proper graphic equaliser with boosted speaker etc. works a treat for me, but i don't think the speaker is too bad anyway.
The worst bit about this phone, and ironically has not been mentioned, is the camera. Its great outdoors, but with any lack of light it seriously hunts around for focus making it all but useless in anything but bright sunshine.
