android phone support

Hmm... The latest versions of Android are targeted at tablets. Why would I want that on a phone?

hey, you are the one that brought up Apple, not me :lol:

I'm just posting it to talk about android only - don't see any reason to bring iOS updates into the discussion at all

My point was that an article that just goes by how many releases behind they are against the OS is in releases will be misleading.

I have to say, I think for most people it doesn't matter. The people who want smartphones tend to change when their contract is up for this weeks hottest phone. Effectively, the phone has become disposable. Consumer retail devices are generally like that - there is little effort put into the product once it is released (and I'm speaking from experience here as I've spent the last 17 years developing software for consumer devices...). The only time effort is placed on further development is when a revenue stream can be generated from it.

Computers (and OS's) are not the norm....

but these days phone contracts are often 2 years long and release with a device that is already out of date for the OS. Thats a long time to never get an update.

there is a section of the blog which says pretty much the same thing as you

It appears to be a widely held viewpoint3 that there’s no incentive for smartphone manufacturers to update the OS: because manufacturers don’t make any money after the hardware sale, they want you to buy another phone as soon as possible. If that’s really the case, the phone manufacturers are spectacularly dumb: ignoring the 2 year contract cycle & abandoning your users isn’t going to engender much loyalty when they do buy a new phone.

i dont think the android market can ever be really successful though until that changes. apps will be released that large numbers of customers will not be able to use

Once Ice Cream Sandwich becomes mainstream thus putting everyone on an even keel it won't be so bad but until then there is a lot of fragmentation across the android board.

If you need an update that is. Many users are happy with what they have, those that aren't tend to be techy and root their phone.

Or the apps will be lowest common denominator.

What version of Android do you need to play Angry Birds on anyway? ;)
