I'm after a canon 55-250 to go with the soon to have tamron 17-50 vc version!
I've been watching a few on eBay and it annoys me that a lens that is worth £120 brand new is already at £75 with 4 hrs to go, others are at £70 with a couple of days to go! People get carried away on eBay I bet this lens goes for nearly £100 what's the point!!!!!

Why not just buy a new one then? :bonk: :D

looks as thou its in favor of the seller....

I've seen it in the past where people pay near on the new price for items when it works out better to actually buy the damm thing new & get the warranty/guarantee on it - plus the P&P is a lot cheaper & quicker than what some people ask for... Also you know the history on it - NEW!!!

Buy one from elsewhere, seems the easiest answer. Not many good deals on the bay ATM.

Last week I bought a new canon L lens retail. For £30+ cheper than the same one second hand on Ebay. People just get carried away. Insted of setting them selfs a sensible limit.

yeah lol i was looking at lee filters people where bidding for a big stopper which was at £360 and a seven pages on someone was selling one for £200 buy it now, lol how stupid at ebay buyers.

Ebaying to some people is a "be all an end all" and there is no such thing as high street shop's.....

I know that I would buy from the net as its sometimes cheaper & more convenient than me to spend time out at the shops - but I do check first....

Like an earlier post - ebay isn't all that cheaper or for bargians now-a-days....

As above, the chance of bargains on eBay is none existent these days due to people automatically assuming it's the cheapest place to buy things and in-turn spend over the odds, or they just get carried away.

The only way you'd get something for a good price on there is either BIN items from sellers who don't know what they're selling, badly described items (how I got my 50L for a good price), or badly listed items.

Or just a bad auction end time, which could end, for example, on tuesday afternoon :shake: It happens :rules:

Anything ending on Sunday evening is almost certain to get some crazy bids.

I haven't bought much camera gear off ebay, it's in single figures, but I wont be buying anything else as every item I've bought has been faulty or somehow wrongly described. As I've bought so few items I may have just been unlucky but I've decided not to bother anymore and these days I buy from here (100% happy with stuff from here) or from dealers.

On the hand , it's bad for sellers, including all the fees. The seller looses around 14-15% to ebay/paypal!

Ok last rant, been watching these canon 55-250 on eBay, one has just sold for £116 + £10 postage that's for a seconed hand mk 1 no box no hood no filters just lens and instruction manual!!

Where are they selling new at 120 quid? guessing its not from a reputable UK dealer

Bristolcameras are usually one of the cheapest but they have them at £199.

I do not use ebay anymore as I also agree you end up paying more, by the time you add on postage what's the point? Item may work out more expensive, it may also be second hand plus item may not work. Plus you may not even get the item! I can't understand why people pay dearer for second hand stuff :wacky:

I would much rather buy from a shop, I did have a look on ebay for a lens the other week, but people were asking silly prices for buy it now listings. Auction listing I would not bother with, why offer to pay more for an item :wacky:

a company called photo direct are labelling them for £125 with free postage!
Doesn't look like a grey import could be wrong though!!

Their last feedback was for a Canon Kiss X4, so reckon they are not selling UK stock

Just out of intrest is there any way to find out if a lens is a grey import??

Have also been on the look out for one of these lens think I may just buy one brand new with the price there selling for.

For what I have been reading over a few threads regarding grey imports is that if its a Canon lens then they seem to honour them - its seems to be the likes of Nikon & Sigma that dont....

Thats only by what I have read on a few forums - so i t may be correct but not 100% sure...

L Lenses used to come with an international warranty so Canon were honour bound to deal with them, have a feeling I read somewhere that may have changed now.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens can currently be had for £132 on Amazon atm.....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0056E49MK/watersphotogr-21/ref=nosim

Never even bother looking for new items on ebay, you can always find it cheaper elsewhere. Only tend to use it for second hand stuff, and even though it's not quite as cheap as it used to be, bargains can still be had. Prices aren't helped by numpties bidding too early and pushing prices up.

I usually go for the BIN/make an offer items as I cant stand the bidding malarky... I did bid on something cheap 2yrs ago it was for .99p an the seller had 100's of them but as this particular one was ending in 30sec I was pipped and they ended up paying £1.29 - when the next listing of the same item finished 1 min later - which was the same item, from same seller but I got it for the starting bid of .99p..

I cant see why people do it - they must just see that only one & dont check for anyothers... What they see is what they want no matter how much they want to pay for it....

Bet they don't lol.
Bet they advertise they have and will take payment but they won't have stock and won't bother mentioning that until you chase.
Been there, done that, more than once, never again :(

I bought a 55-250 IS off the forum classifieds for £110. When I got it you wouldn't be able to tell it from a brand new lens, apart from the fact it wasn't boxed. It works flawlessly and as so, I don't really need to know the history of the lens from when it was new.
I very rarely buy any second hand lenses off ebay anymore, I did a couple of times and had no problems though. It's just I prefer to look on here first, as the prices seem a bit more realistic and the gear seems well looked after.
As a side note on the ridiculous prices on ebay, someone has just sold an empty camera box for £82 + £2.82 p&p. With prices like that I must have about 500 quids worth of cardboard up in the loft. Who'da thought it.

Just had a look on www.Hdewcameras.co.uk and they have the 55-250 IS MkI for £139 and the MkII at £165, and I can highly recommend them as a company as I bought a 5D2 and 24-105 f4 L off them last november.

I bought a lens from ebay, phoned up the shop to pay. They sent my £600 lens and never took a penny for it :)

Ebay is great sometimes!!!

dont stop there..:nono:..share the knowledge (y)

a few weeks ago amazon were selling 55-250s new for £130 - i think they are back up to 199 now so i'm not sure what that was about.

also mpb have mint s/h ones for £120 - which i'd rather do than buy an unknown or grey import off ebay

Hi, yes I'd prefer to buy from someone on here, I'm in the most wanted section!! Did just miss out today on eBay mkll with hood and 2 filters 6 months old, it sold for £99.99

Only ever bid at the last second (use a snipe service if you think you will forget the auction end time or be busy then). Decide the most you are prepared to pay for the item and then put in one bid for that amount about 5 seconds before the auction end time (either manually for the adrenalin rush or via a snipe).

Never understood why people bid when an auction still has days to run - they are only going to be outbid and will just push up the price - someone else then bids higher and so it continues. Great for sellers but not for buyers. There was a camera last night with over 50 bids on it with almost 24 hours still to run on the auction. :wacky:

There are indeed very few 'bargains' on ebay (and as has been said lots of people paying near or even over new retail price for used items) but I have picked up some items at a fair/reasonable price - you just have to be patient and accept that if you get outbid on an item another one will probably come along soon unless you are after something particularly scarce/rare. (Set up a saved search with an email alert).

I picked up a cobra tripod the other day for 6 quid! Prob a load of rubbish i no! just thought I'd buy cheap see if I use it then may be upgrade later!!

I did the same, bought a £10 eBay tripod, used it until it broke (when it whacked into something when attached to my bag) but by then I knew I used it loads and went for the Jessops Major Carbon Fibre.

I prefer the classifieds or MBP, although I may need to put some stuff on fleabay on Monday so won't complain if they sell well ;)

I've noticed a few bargains in our local cash converters/CEX stores lately - one had a 5D mk 1 in for £520.00

I tend to use ebay as a method of accessing all those cheap versions of things the high street shops will charge an arm and a leg for. For example, HDMI cables, connectors, unusual sized screws etc.

I also use it as a method of buying from refurbished dealers or second hand items that are harder to source than through specialist forums. For example, I have just (this morning) bought a couple of reconditioned UPS' that are selling new for £310 each (including new batteries) that I picked up for £110 delivered each.

I'm very wary of buying high value "commodity" items (and by commodity, I mean things that are generally available on the high street) there. I.e. it lets me buy from traders/individuals who have items I would have difficulty finding easily elsewhere.

Also, sniping is the only way to bid IMHO (although most of the stuff I buy is buy-it-now)
