Microsoft have announced it will be killing off live onecare and replacing it with a free alternative MORRO nice to see Bills team actually giving something away for a change:thumbs:
 
We run Avast pro and for two PCs it only £35 so its not breaking the bank and it works flawlessly but I will give it a go once its released as Onecare was quite good too
 
They give loads of stuff away, which is why the EU keep fining them... :lol:
 
Chances are it will only be the absolute minimum (like there firewall) which will still mean you will have to purchase or obtain another anti virus programs, who remember the anti virus that came with dos 6.* :gag:

there is no reason why a free AV program shouldnt be equally good or better than paid ones.

i use the free Avast over works paid for Sophos. tried AVG and found it a little bloated compared to a year ago and it let a few things through.
 
I've used AVG for many years without a problem. I also have a few IT specialist friends who write for the PC mags and they admit that while AVG has become a bit more bloated it's still fantastic for free.

AVG does well in the tests as well - never comes top (nor does it's commercial version), but normally scores higher than both McAffee and Kaspersky (which I had major issues with).

Best scoring of the 'common' ones, both free and commercial, is Symantec Norton Internet Security - but then they actually listened to their customers and it's had a lot of the bloat removed - and you really can tell.
 
BT are dropping Norton in favour of McAfee as their built in antivirus, not that I use it, too resource hungry for my liking, another avast user here.

AVG, Avira Free edition, and Avast all good programs :)
 
I also use Avast. I think it's better than AVG. ;)
 
Avast also,works fine for me and updates every day,also got malwarybites that i update every week and scan as a secondary test.also got comodo firewall with leak detection hopefully reasonably safe :lol:
 
You can get a 3 PC license for Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 for £6.99 - absolutely the best AV/Security suite out there, and for that price you can't go wrong...
 
I used to use AVG but then made the move over to Avira, much more to my liking and a great little program!

Check the feedback on it on Amazon - I'm one of the people on there (and there's more than a few) who complained about this poorly piece of writen code.

I run XP, up to date with patches. Kasperk***** used to blue screen my PC semi regularly. Bloatware McAfee never did that in it's previous 2 iterations, nor does the Doc Sols Security, which I replaced it with after just 5 months.

Also it is highly intrusive, and I mean highly - if you burn stuff to DVD/CD regularly be prepared for it to warn you about your software every time you start it up, and to my surprise 9wish I'd read up before buying it) in the same anti-virus tests that AVG do well in, Kasperksy comes close to the bottom, especially in the false warning category.

It's easy to stop all the warning stuff if you configure it to suit your tastes/needs - it has to err on the side of caution for the people who don't have a clue... as for blue screens? Never; not since I've been using it for the last three years or so, and must have installed it on at least 20-30 systems over that period.

If you want real problems, buy Symantec... :D
 
Not true about symantec anymore.

read the reviews of NIS 2009. It realy is quite good and runs flawlessly on one of my old test bed systems.
 
Another problem free Kaspersky user here :)

Updated to the latest version recently. Seems better than the previous one which would slow the computer a little during updates. hardly notices now.

DekHog - can you change your sig please as any kind of code is not allowed in sig files even if it is harmless.

Sorry Dekhog but I configured as much as I could. It is impossible to stop it warning for programs such as Roxio Nero (CD/DV burner) and Getright (download manager).

Aside from that it was
  • Memory hungry
  • Unreliable
  • not guaranteed to restart properly after updating
  • the cause of BSDs
  • mis-reporting
  • deleted valid emails withnout warning (though I found how to disable this feature)

Agree. I used AVG for years.. but when it scans it slows everything down SOOOO much. Avast is much better as far as that is concerned.

Isn't AVG an antivirus and Zone Alarm a Firewall?
 
Zone Alarm have a commercial variant that includes AV software, the free version is firewall only.
