Yes
My mother in law has a new Macbook Pro.

She has, today, gone onto broadband with BT Internet and wants to set up her Macmail to receive and send e-mails from her existing Waitrose.com e-mail address.

I spent an hour on the BT Internet help line and got nowhere.

Are there any Apple specialists who might be able to help me help her please?

Thanks

Do you know the server details and the user name / password ?

If so, macmail is pretty simple to set up.

BT wont help you with a Waitrose.com account, as Brian said youll need the details from Waitrose. You'll need to use their outbound SMTP server also as I believe BT restrict theirs to BT addresses.

I have the details for both - smtp etc.

She can receive e-mails (from her Waitrose account) via Macmail but she can't send them.

Which smtp.xxx should i input and where?

Does it matter which port is selected?

As you may tell, I'm not familiar with Macs

For sending emails she will need to use the broadband provider's smtp setting.

For example I am with be broadband and have to use " smtp.betherenow.co.uk" for all my many different accounts.

not if a lot of ISP they block all access from addresses that arent their own.

in this case the OP should try the waitrose provided one first. you may also need to authenticate against it in which case you generally provide the same username and password to receive mail.

BT have their smtp servers sown up tighter than a ducks bottom!

We us BT as our ISP at work and had to jump through hoops to be able to send emails out through their servers with our @companyname.co.uk rather than @btconnect.com :bonk:

If you're feeling brave, I would suggest you give them a call and explain what you want to do. They should be able to set your account to be able to send email as @waitrose.com but I fear you may have to go through a few people in Delhi before you get to someone who actually knows what their talking about :shake:

There's nothing in RFC822 (or successors) about MTAs splattering what they feel like all over the Sender: and Reply-To: headers. Any ISP that does this is rubbish and should be ditched on that basis, having an the ISP not fart-arse around with stuff I do is a fairly major thing in which one I choose - which is why I'm with a&a.

I'm also currently engaged in trying to figure out where your avatar picture is from . I want to say He knows you know, but think it's later (and remember that one as being rather more disturbing for some reason) - perhaps Assasing? I don't pull my 12" single collection out very often and can no longer remember all of them.

Yup, I'm with Orange (formerly Wanadoo) at home and run 5 seperate email addresses with different @whatever suffixes, through their smtp with no issues whatseover :)

Brave ;)

There is a very good reason for using the proper smtp gateway of the actual email domain. Especial so with mobile devices. The thing is if you move the laptop (or phone, tablet etc) on a another network it may stop working again when it is not a btinternet connection.

Just use the outgoing details from the mail provider in the account settings, and you may even have to tick the login before sent since you won't be on the domain. Once done that it will work fool proof where ever you take it.

Oh and fanboys is really quite a derogatory term not nice to use even in jest when you want to get some assistance.

I'd check the SMTP Server details again and also the Port No - maybe ask BT for that. You can check this by_
Mail-> Preferences->Accounts->Account information->Click on the drop down menu next to
SMTP->Select Edit SMTP Server list->Advanced
