That can help me with this.
The wife has a Sony laptop, every time she closes a site or programme, she looses her desktop. All that is shown is a white screen. To get the desk top back, she has to press the start key, then this will reveal a desktop icon in the tray, click on that and the desktop is back.
The OS is Vista. Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Has this been happening for long? If not I'd try Start -> Search Bar "System Restore" -> Click Next then this should give you a list of dates to where you can restore your computer to. Select one of these and keep continuing. This wont get rid of any personal files and is completely reversable anyways.

Give that a go and let us know how you get on.
