Hi

I want to take a course in photography... I have seen a coyple i.e ICS do one, open university do one.... City & Guilds etc..

Can anyone recommend a good starting place please?

Thanks,
Deb

Ive just started the Institute of Professional Photography Diploma course

Theres a folder with loads of reading to do and then an assignment at the end of each section (20 in total) and you basiclly can't fail the course, if you get A, B or C you move on if you get D, E, or F you can re-do it until you pass

The diploma is a recognised one with the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council so I dont think you can ask for more than that in terms of recognition

you also get a press pass - when you send off 2 passport pictures, waiting on it now, that gets you in to "events" but I dont know what events yet

For less than £500 quid i think it will help you develop loads of new skills and you are assigned a pro photographer to mark your work, which means you should get some excellent feedback,
this is my pro/tutor - Graham Light from here
http://www.abbey-studios.co.uk/

I looked about a bit before I signed up to this, deffo looks like one of the best out there and a reasonable price

need to know anymore, drop me a line/pm ;)

Stevie,

Apart from the under £500 course fees, do U find yourself paying extras on other related misc stuff connected to your course?

Also is it a digital or film course?

Thanks.

I'm doing the same course as Stevie, and I havent really found myself buying extra bits.
Its for film or digital, but mainly digital as there is a module in that covers manipulation techniques regarding software [GIMP] which they send to you [which I personally dont like].

Other than that, its basically phone calls and letters.
Would you like me to put up a list of what different aspects of photography the course covers?

:)

That's would be absolutely wonderful dellipher.

Good man.

Most of the assignments have tutor-marked assignments at the end of the module, that you can either mail/email to your tutor, including photographs of given assignments. All have mini-assignments within them too. :runaway:

Hi StevieF8
how long have you been doing that course, had a quick link to the website, is the press pass for real?

I think the press-pass is for real, I havent sent off my pictures and recieved mine...so I cannot say!!

Hi everyone...

I know this is an old thread but I found it when I was searching info about the Institute of Professional Photography Diploma course (http://www.inst.org/photography-courses). I'm thinking of starting the course and I'd like to hear from people that have actually done it. I'd be very very interested in reading your comments.

Thanks in advance.

hi - i was wondering about these open learning courses. i checked out the open university course but the reviews from students wasnt great! i was wondering ***' the other links that have been mentioned here do you need to have photography experience to qualify for a place or can you be of beginner/intermediate level. i have already completed a beginners evening course and would like to move up a level now. is there anyone here who has completed one of these on-line courses that can comment.
thanks in advance

I do a BA HONS at Salisbury college and its one of the best in the country, its fantastic, three years long and basically has been so far the best three months of my life

we do a whole day a week on Photoshop, we do darkroom work, image manipulation, lighting and all sorts

we have loads of ex students go on to do loads of really cool stuff and they come back and talk to us and help us get a foot in

if you have the time and incination, do a full course, i think it such a huge subject to learn. but absolutely facinating

hey, i'm seriously looking to take the course that dellipher has explained about. Can anyone else vouch for what the course is like? As at the mo 500 quid is a lot of money to me lol, and i dont want to waste it!

Also feeb mate, dead jelous, would love to study down there, just wish i had finished college and got some A levels, all to easy to say that now though!

but yeah any advice on this course would be mega

many thanks
Matt :)

Dude i just took my portfolio in and got in as a mature student! which is quite a bargain, its alot of work but am learning massive amounts every day, cant fault it really

dellipher, have you found yu have got much out of the course though, and any closer to getting paid work, or published?

and feeb, how did you go about applying mate, as i have no qualifications other then GCSE's and i thought you had to have A levels to get into the place?

many thanks matt
:)

Basically i went in, spoke to the head of first year photography, blagged an interview (just with my natural charm!) took in my portfolio and an assignment i made him give me (500 words on something or other) and blagged it

i am considered a mature student so actually i dont NEED A-Levels to get in.

it was a good blag, lots of big portfolio cases and mounted card prints and stuff, i also took in my lap top to show him some of my digital manipulation stuff
he was quite impressed and he let me on!

thats the best way to do it, just go and see the tutor and blag your way in. if you've got raw talent, they arent gonna say no!
