Anyone do estate agent shots before?

Yes
Bit of an odd one, a friend of mine is in the process of selling his house and the estate agents shots are, even to his creative inner neanderthal, atrocious. He's asked me to get some images for him knowing thats what I used to get paid for which I don't mind doing if they will use them.

However, I don't know if the estate agent would be willing to use them or if they insist on using their own to avoid any shouts of misrepresentation etc. I don't think I've ever seen any pro or semi-pro shots used by an estate agent before.

Anyone submitted and had photos used before?

Considering you pay the Estate agent to sell your house and some, from personel experience, dont seem to do much work for the money they get off you, some of their photographs are as you say trash to say the least and they should be classed as misrepresentation, the pictures are there to promote the house and i have a few times not wanted to see the house because of the crap pictures which possibly has made me miss a great house that i might have bought.

So if the Estate agent wont use the better pictures that you have taken, get another one who will, or sell it privately because you dont actually need an agent to sell it.

I sold a house a couple of years ago and the photos the estate agent took on his p&s were mediocre at best so i tried to have the estate agent use my photos but they just kept making excuses why they couldn't use them.

They tried claiming they couldn't open the file format (jpeg), so I said I would send them in any format they wanted. Then they said their email system blocks photos so I turned up with a cd only to be told all of their cd drives were broken.

I gave up.

Ah well I'll give it a go anyway - I owe him for some plastering he did for me so he can have these photos as payment!

What? If the house is expensive enough, they'll hire a professional for sure. Have a video made, and even get aerial shots done.

I've done a few houses for friends and the estate agents were delighted to use them. Only thing I would say is that their standard image format is 4:3 so if you supply 3:2 from a DSLR they won't fit the boxes. Just trim off the edges.

We're talking the realms of mere mortal houses here - around the £200k mark. Didn't think about the ratios so thanks for that, think I'll just bung some crops on the disc as well.

I told my estate agent that I was a photographer and he said he was happy if I wanted to do the shots - after all, it was my house i was trying to sell and if it helped then fine by him. It sold in a day BTW ;)

The in laws are selling their house for a 7 figure sum, and needless to say a pro was hired to take the photos. Father in law sent me the pics, they're pretty good. From what I could see, and what he told me, the guy spent a lot of time arranging things to be just right, not so much re-arranging rooms, more subtle adjustments. They all appear to be natural light, but given the large size and height of the windows, that's probably the best way of showing the house. He also came on a sunny day (one of the few we've had), which made for plenty of good light, and enabled some really good ones to be taken in the grounds.

Our estate agent came round with a D5000 and Sigma 10-20, shot with a tripod and made a pretty good job of it. They replace the sky in PP (sending the file to India!?!) but no major adjustments are done. I assume this is to ensure no misrepresentation of the house. He did move a few bits out of the way, kids toys etc to make the pics look better.
To be honest, it looked pretty easy and nothing I couldn't have done myself.

Both times I've moved, I have noticed that some estate agents do actually want to represent the house in a good light, so do a decent job like you say. I suppose the low cost of kit like your EA had (10-20mm + base DSLR) is an affordable expense for them these days so they'd be fools not to use decent gear. Mind you, looking on right move (etc) it's clear that some agencies are not paying much attention to photography because there are some abhorrent images on there

I did theses for some one when I was on holiday in Filey http://www.housescape.org.uk/cgi-bin/full.pl?&nic2&&F5678&& (Did not do the side one).

This guy came up to me when I was taking photos and asked if I would do some of is house as the estate agents was on good at all. I got a free holiday out of it.

I used sigma 10-20 mm on a 550D and tripod.

If I can't put the URL on please delete MOD's

Nice work

When we sold our house I also took the photos and sent them to the estate agents. They were more than happy to use them and agreed they were better than the ones they took. We sold within a week too:) My Sigma 10-20mm came in a really useful!

As an update to this I took a disc in this morning to the estate agent with 14 shots in two sizes, and they said.....

Thank you very much, these are fantastic we'll upload them to the website straightaway, now can you give us some tips please!

So 35 minutes later, and they have a new Nikon ultrawide compact on order to replace their cybershot and understand a bit about flattering angles and why it goes white when you take a photo of a wall with a large window on it. I did pitch them, but their argument was that when they list a house for sale with typical values they don't make enough out of it to cover a professional to take the brochure shots, plus there is no guarentee that they will sell it, instead the vendor might put it with another agent as I can kindof see where they are coming from, as they don't get paid until they sell the house.

When I did the house shoot I was very careful to not misrepresent it in any way. The house is really nicely decorated and well kept, it was just a case of decluttering a couple of shots. The weather played ball on sunday as well, so really happy with the externals with a nice blue sky and some wispy clouds :)

We used my photos when we sold the last house.
Estate Agent was more than happy to do it that way :)
