Anyone Know About Digital Projectors?

I haven't got a clue, except that it seems you need to shell out about a grand to get anything half decent!

However, I may need one soon and need to find out a bit more. For that sort of money I can expect to get a 1920 x 1080 HD resolution machine such as the Epson TW2900 or the Sanyo PLV2700, both of which have attracted excellent reviews.

However, those reviews are based on watching movies on Blu-ray and I wonder if the quality be the same for still images, bearing in mind I will either hook up direct to a lap top or a normal DVD player using a disk downloaded from my PC. For all I know it could be complete overkill, meaning a much cheaper machine would suffice, or woefully inadequate, meaning a much greater outlay is neccessary - and beyond my reach.

If it turns out I need a Blu-ray player to match the quality of the projector, can you record to Blu-ray disks from the PC? Or am I completely misunderstanding the whole concept?

Regarding connectivity, can you play a side show sequence of still images from a DVD player, or do you need to do it with specialist software on a computer? I don't need any fancy tricks (at this stage), just the ability to manually change slides when required as I deliver a commentry.

Any other thoughts? I'm so confused I don't even know what questions I should be asking!

Life was much easier in the days of film projectors! Any help will be most appreciated.

I'll just give this a bump in case anyone who can help has missed it. :)

Thanks Neil, I'll look into it. :)

If you are going to only project images and watch standard dvd then it is too much...

Most projectors work at a minimum of 800 x 600 and have vga input from pc and composite(Red,Yellow,White leads)inputs.

I have used a projector to show films/dvds with a Dvd player from Tesco(£15) and a set of Powered Pc Speakers(£10).

The things to look out for are Lumens(brightness) the higher the better and resolution 800x600+.

Depends on really what you want to use it for...

One thing to note is that the replacement bulbs can be up to £70+

Thinking of buying this myself...

John, I look after the projector for our camera club and also set it up for colour etc.

If you want one for still images then nearly all camera clubs, and inc national competitions use a resolution of 1024 x 768. A few use 1400 x 1050 which is much more expensive.

We now have an Optoma E752 (about £580) which has a 6 segment colour wheel and I believe this gives greater colour accuracy. I have to say it is very good indeed for colour and sharpness etc. Also very good with shadow/dark areas.

Spare lamps are also a good price for this projector which is something to look out for as some are mega bucks.

I think this projector has just been discontinued but am thinking of having one myself for talks etc.

Pity you are so far away as you could of had a demo with your images.
