Anyone know the capacity of the Lowepro Flipside 400aw?

As per the title I'd like to know the capacity of the Flipside 400 in litres as I can't find it anywhere. I'm off to Silverstone next month for the title and they're upping the security saying that you can only take bags up to 20litres.

How the hell are they going to prove a bag is exactly 20l?

Dunno, I'm guessing if it's something like they'll be OK but obviously if you take something way over then they might stop you. I've no idea what a 20 litre bag looks like thought to know if the 400aw is way bigger or not :lol:
 
Fill it with frozen peas measured out from a litre jug? :)
 
Multiply the internal dimensions (which are on the Lowepro website) to get the capacity in cc, then convert to litres.

Crikey, you do well. With my D750 and Tamron 150-600mm there's not much room for anything else, but then I've not really tried.

The external dimension work out as 35 litres so that's a lot of padding if it's 17 litres internally. From my experience the bag isn't made up of 50% padding. I would suggest emailing/phoning silverstone to check they haven't got an airport style checker or an idea of what dimensions they feel is bigger than 20 litres. Either you get in with it or you wont (how far will it be back to the car if the bag doesn't get in?). If it's only one lens with camera attached why not take it in attached to a strap and buy a fold up dry bag to put in your pocket in case you need to protect it from the possible British weather.

Interesting thoughts. I plan on taking a couple of cameras and lenses so I'll need a bag unfortunately.
 
Do they mean internal or external dimensions? If it is external you have a problem. If they are going to check I expect they will measure external dimensions. Email them?

Let us know the answer. If it is external it is is rather small limit. I bought a 400 flipside last month as my existing backpack was too small for my sigma . Took it to Silverstone two weeks go where security was minimal, if not non existent, but unfortunately this does not help you. Hopefully your ticket was not too expensive.

Check the questions/answers where someone asks for the size in "liters". The answer was approx. 20lt.

If it is anything like the airport security (coming in at Heathrow recently) I had to take all 2 lenses out of the bag to be X-Rayed separately (Ok that was a travel bag with lots of cr@p cables etc). If your bag has any hard padding like a thick bottom I see on pictures expect possible difficulties.

Yeah, I'll definitely post the response from Silverstone. Tickets were very expensive (Grandstand at Club Corner) but the bag issue won't obviously stop me going, I'll just have to take one camera/lens in at a time and if I find I've chosen the wrong focal length go back and change it. I'm going Fri, Sat, Sun and hopefully it will not be too busy on Friday so I can go back and swap quite easily if I need to, and by Saturday I should've figured out what I need. I'm taking my D750 with 150-600mm, and D7200 with 70-200mm. I have thought about hiring the 80-400mm, or even the new Sigma 100-400mm instead of taking the 150-600mm to save a bit of weight, but not sure 400mm on FF will be enough. I'm even considering hiring the 300mm f4 with 1.4tc. Instead. Unfortunately my muscles are getting worse and 3 days with the 150-600mm might take its toll.

I'm not sure they'll have that kind of security at Silverstone tbh, but you never know.

I have mine with me this weekend and have the D750, 150-600, 70-200, 16-35, 85 and 24-120 all squeezed in.
 
Had an official response from Silverstone:-

"We will not be measuring bags, but are asking the the public to assist by bringing the minimum they need, we are expecting delays entering the circuit so the less for you to unpack to be checked…."

So all's good (y)

Only two cameras and two lenses,........... + spare batteries, spare cards, and monopod :D At least with the flipside you just open the big compartment and everything can be seen (y)
 
I carried a Canon 5D mk2 with 70-200 attached, 24-105,17-40 and a tightly folded up lightweight waterproof jacket plus a s*** load of cakes

No one seems to have chipped in on this point.
I think you'll be carrying the 150-600 around most of the time.
I find 300 mm on a crop okay in the stands at club, but that means 480 effective mm on your FF. Other stands (such as the loop) have my 150-500 maxed on the crop.

Too late now, but if you can get to the circuit for the WEC or something similar, then you can try out your lenses and locations in a far less hectic environment.

I plan on standing by the fences on Friday and Saturday rather then sitting in the stands (weather permitting) so am hoping that 400mm ish might be OK?

That's where I'll be for race day, but for practice at least I would like to be at track level. I'm hoping I can 'remove' the fencing with panning and/or shallow DOF. I know there's a place at Becketts without fencing but I guess everyone will make a bee line for that.
