Anyone seen this? - UltraFit Sling Strap by JOBY

Thanks for the link - looks like an interesting design.

Looks the same as the Blackrapid, not sure why they say revolutionary?

Also, do they realise they have named their product after a poo?

Joby is the name of the company, not the product. They've been around for years, but this is the first tog product I've seen from them.

Does the Blackrapid pull tight against the body? I thought the BR was just a normal sling strap, albeit a well made one.

Watching the video, it appears you can set it tight to your body for walking, then using magic, as you pull the camera body round, the strap releases allowing you to put the camera to your eye.
Great idea as my worry has been the camera moving around.

Choices! I had pretty well decide to go for the BR but this one looks interesting! Given I take ages to make my mind up on a purchase, I now need more time to think, sad but true:eek:

I quite like the look of this. I use a BR but do find it swings around alot and find my self holding it still,so it doesnt bang on stuff.
This looks like it could be better for holding it still, but not sure how well it would work with bigger lenses kike a 70-200.

This is the one thing Black rapid straps are lacking. Neat idea. It looks a bit rip-off from BR but at least they have added something to the design. I might actually switch my BR sport for one, want to see some reviews first though.

I'm such a muppet - they make the Gorillapod!

I use my BR with a Manfrotto quick release plate which is kind of an essential feature for me. If you could do the same with this then I could be tempted too...

How does using it with a QR plate make it any more convenient? You can just unhook from the screw mount?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'just unhook from the screw mount'... but with a QR plate (and the Fastenr-T1 Black Rapid sell to use with it) you can switch between the strap and tripod/monopod in a couple of seconds without any unscrewing or messing around. If there's a better way i've missed I'd love to know

AH righty. No I was genuinely interested. Anything that makes things smoother. I mean you can unhook the strap from the wee screw that attaches to the camera. Rather than having to unscrew it each time.

Ah I see... yes, the QR plate goes between the screw and the camera so you are all ready to mount on the tripod after unhooking. Not sure if this JOBY one will allow you to do that, I'll have to ask them the question. :)

Interesting, this may even work for my climbing photography. Does it hug your body well and not bounce around when walking (or climbing)?

Hi there. I work for JOBY and saw this thread. Let me take a stab at explaining the product with a minimum of marketing-speak.

There are a few basic things driving the design. We wanted it to be comfortable, but we think comfort is more about putting your camera where it feels the most comfortable and out of your way (as opposed to say just using a big brick of foam for padding). Everybody has a different carrying style, and we wanted something that you could quickly customize.

We didn’t like how sling straps are so loose and thought they swayed too much (bumping into you or other things) when you’re walking, you can’t bend over much (killer if you’re like a parent chasing your kids around), can’t sit down on a bench without the camera hitting it, etc.

Finally, for a strap, your camera spends most of its time away from your face so you need it out of the way and comfortable but still need to whip it out in a flash and then return it back to out of the way just as fast. Eg, shooting an event where you have to mingle with the crowd and you need your securely camera out of the way.

So, those are the problems we are trying to solve. The big thing about the strap is that you can cinch it quickly where you want it to fit on your body and then you can instantly extend the camera to your face and then immediately recinch it. This is what you see in the videos on our site. The guy liked it cinched a little lower and in front, but the woman on the female sling strap page liked it cinched more behind her, higher up. One designer likes the camera in the small of his back because he does a lot of hiking. It’s up to you.

The fast cinch mode is secure enough for most situations like brisk walking. Obviously, if you bend totally over at the waist, the weight of the camera could cause it to uncinch if it falls forward (no different than pulling it to your face). But we added a cam-lock if you wanted that really secure cinch as opposed to a quick-draw style. Then you’d unlock if you want to go back to a quick-draw cinch.

Is this for the photographer with a gigantic camera and lens? Probably not (seriously, is there really a sling strap that makes like 15 lbs of gear comfortable?) But another person here uses a 5d mkII with a 70-200mm lens with the strap which isn’t my idea of a fun time (maybe I need to get to the gym more.) But for a lot of shooters, we hope we’ve created an interesting strap.

Hope that helps. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.

The black rapid range does have quick release clips either side of the mount to stabilise when not in use. It takes about 2 seconds to whip them both in around the mount to secure position. How is this much better?

Good job for coming in to explain.

I'll take a free sample for testing if you like ;)

Hey Ian... and welcome! :)

I really like the concept, the most annoying thing about the BR straps is the way the camera swings around when I am trying to move gear around in the studio.

Key to me though is the ability to swap quickly between the strap and the tripod... As in my post above, can it be used with a QR plate like the Black Rapid straps?

Am very interested in buying one of these.

If you are able how about setting up some sort of special price buy in option for forum users ... would be a good way of getting the product "out there" and members would benefit as well ;)

Great idea.

im pretty keen on finding out more- with the potential view of a purchase....

if using 2 of them (on opposite shoulders for different bodies) would they still work without geting caught up in one another, or do they 2 a double variant perhaps???

Have a look at the Cinch by Luma Labs. IMO a way better design than the Joby. Been getting some good reviews as well.

That failsafe strap going to the proper strap mounts is a big selling point for me, although it doesn't seem quite as simple as the BR etc with some extra strap pulling involved?

The strap pulling appears to be because of the cinch mechanism - you could always leave it hanging loose like a BR strap, but that then defeats the main selling point?

Ah, I see. I think I'll have a closer look at this one.

A mild tangent, but I think a lot of product design really boils down to expressing a point of view on how you think something should work.

Photography is obviously a big thing here at JOBY, and a lot of us have owned the camera straps that we liked, but our design team started thinking "it'd be better if a camera strap did X, Y, Z instead A, B, and C." And then you hope there are enough people out there who agree with you that makes it a worthwhile product to make. It's really more about finding those people who agree with you than creating The One Camera Strap To Rule Them All.

Ok, onto various questions:
"Why can't you just use clips, things that hang off your strap to grab on to, etc. to secure your strap. It just takes 2 seconds"

We wanted something you could cinch up and deploy instantly. We think it'd be a lot easier to just pull the strap and camera to get the camera to where you want it close to your body and have it reasonably stay there. No clips to futz with, no loops that are hanging off the strap just to be pulled, etc.

And when you want to shoot, you just pull it with *one* hand to your face. We didn't want 2 seconds. We wanted it to occur right away (assuming you're not using the cam-lock to really lock the camera strap down)

The lead auto-play video at the top of our female camera strap page (http://joby.com/camera-straps/ultrafit-sling-strap-for-women/) shows it better than our men's page. She pulls the strap loose from its cinched position with one hand, decides to let it hang low as just a generic shoulder sling strap, and then cinches it up behind her just by pulling the strap and camera in opposite directions and guiding the camera where she wants to go. The O ring that she uses to pull the strap doubles as a way to let the strap naturally rotate to where you want the camera to go.

Some people want it to hang high or low or in front or in back or close or loose. We wanted to let people put the strap where it was most comfortable for them instantly. We didn't see other straps doing this, but that doesn't mean that there isn't (or won't be in the future) alternative ways to do this.

This is just the JOBY point of view on how a camera strap should work. It's up to you to pick the strap that matches your needs.

- "When will it be available in the UK"
Er...Good question. I know it's coming on the site at the start of October, but then you have VAT, shipping costs, etc for non-US buyers. We have this sign-up form when you click on Add-to-cart on the site to let you know when it does comes into stock on the site. Not sure when it's going to get to the UK-specific channels though. Jessops, let us in! ;)

- "Can I wear two of these at the same time."
Well, it wasn't designed for it per se, but yeah, sure, it should work. I guess there's some chance that something at the back of the strap might butt heads a little with another strap as you're adjusting the strap, but that's unlikely to be an issue.

The pull mechanism to cinch is the camera and the O ring. We've had people in the office wearing two crossed straps with one camera cinched on each side just because they look bad-ass and we can have gunslinging competitions with two cameras (again, the beauty of pulling it loose with just one hand)

- "Deal for forum members"
Let me check around. The tricky thing about trying to get retail partners to carry your product is that they get all antsy when they see discounts being handed out by the manufacturer (especially at launch) and then I get flogged by the regional rep.

- Quick transition from strap to tripod via QR plate.
Right now, you just a screw directly into the camera which means you'd have to unscrew it for a tripod. The strap was really built more for the enthusiast on the go than someone who'd be going from strap to tripod often. We've heard other photographers say something similar, but we though it'd price the strap out of the reach for the enthusiast. Can't make any promises, but if we see enough demand, maybe we can build a solution.

Thanks for taking the time to give all those detailed replies, Ian.

I'll keep a watch out for a 'V2' or whatever with the QR plate compatibility in the future... hope they sell well for you!

Great to see lots of interest in this product.

We, DayMen (distributors of Lowepro, Giotto's, Joby, B+W, Acme Made and ExpoImaging), should be receiving our first stocks in the UK around the beginning of December. At the moment we don't know exactly which retailers will be selling the product but we expect it to be available from most good photo retailers.

Look out for further information nearer the time on www.daymen.co.uk.

thanks
