and got their mail to work on Mail on a Mac, currently use Thunderbird but want to get my i-mac, MBP and i-phone all talking and receiving the same mail so I have access and reference on each machine.

I have to say that I just can't do it and my patience is wearing very, very thin, I am loathed to go and pay for help so if anyone can give me a complete idiots guide then it will be really helpful.

It just seems that Freeparking's system is so damed clunky and old fashioned ?
 
Is it a pop mail server or imap?
 
Pop3 isn't too good at keeping the data synchronised between devices. IMAP is much better. If you have access to edit the MX record you could move your mail over to Google Apps, the standard edition is free, and you can keep everything in sync over multiple devices through IMAP. I have been trying this out on one of my domains and it works really well.

Can I do that with Mail, one of my mates is wanting me to transfer the Domains in to them and then they will look after everything - I just hate changing things, haha !
 
Yup, I use Google Apps with the Apple Mail app.
