Agreed.. alas I have never used a ring flash
But you could try a Meike MK310 or similar, its small and light and not too bad imo, you just need something to extend the light closer to the end of the lens.
 
I have one of these, its really a LED Ring light, not to bad for photographing small objects, but definately not a flash.cheap though.
 
can anyone recommend a cheapish starter flash for macro please I know buy cheap buy twice but im just trying to get into macro a little more thanks
 
They are designed for Macro and close up but no reason why they can't be used as a normal flash, if you don't mind the circular catchlights and the lack of flexibility compared with a speedlight type flash.
 
So would it be better buying a good speed light flash and getting the duct tape and cardboard out

1st one I got was yongnuo yn560-3, works well, good output and the 4 batteries last ages and not that expensive now.

They would be lol I'll check one out I've got about 160 ish to spend on a flash then maybe get the ring flash at a later date thanks for all taking g the time to help me

Don't have to spend that much, mk4 is about 55-75 notes.

Buy both flashes she'll only ever see one at a time I'll tell her you told me to do it cos I ain't getting blamed

im not really sure what I need tbh as ive never used flash before I was thinking i could place the second one to the side etc
or would I be better buying one of these and the yongnuo ringflash

I'd buy one for now and later see if you need any more, I've downsized flash now, it's a Meike mk300 and a flexi arm, photo of my setup. Of course I still have my yongnuo flash as a backup and it can also be used as a slave unit. Hope this helps.
