Anyone using a D810 AND D750 together for weddings etc?

Hi all,

I currently have a D810 and love it. My nikon lenses are great and after my 3 year flirtation with the red ringed temptress that is canon, I'm firmly back on the dark side.

I shot quite a lot of weddings with two 5d mark III's, usually sticking a 35 on one and an 85 on the other. I like to have them both to hand and swap between the two at ease. Now, obviously they were identical cameras with identical settings, which helped a lot in terms of muscle memory and intuitiveness etc.

So...I'll be needing another Nikon. My head is telling me to get another D810 but i must confess my heart is going for a d750, with the added bonus that the 750 is an easier carry around camera for day to day use. My concern though is that the different layouts might cause minor issues in the heat of the moment, after 9 hours shooting a wedding etc.

Now, i'm not TOOO bothered about the cost, although obviously the £500 i would save on the d750 could go towards some nice glass. I'm strangely drawn to the nikon 58 1.4 and that £500 could go a long way towards it ... ;) hmmm

I highly recommend the D750 to my students but my experience
tells me that indeed you'd be better with two of the same. You are
right with the two layouts and the heat of the moment. Weight for
me is irrelevant as I always add the battery pack… my basic bodies
are the D3S and D3X and they have the same size in my paws.

I would not go for the 58 ƒ1.4 if you are not specifically adding to
your shootings a lot of night sceneries… this is where the lens mostly
justifies the price tag.
 
I'm like you with 35 and 85 but on a pair of Df. I don't think I'd want different bodies to be honest. Having two identical is perfect IMO. Like you, I also want the 58mm and I don't agree with Kodiak where he says it's only for night use. Most of my wedding images are shot at f1.4. I've just added the 24mm and the 58mm will be my last hear purchase. I hate buying digital kit nowadays, I'd rather spend it on film!
 
Two of the same makes life a lot easier in several ways - layout/controls/grip, batteries, cards, resolution, editing...

Apologies, I was at work when I read and replied.
The new 58mm is apparently a stunning lens to use. If buying digital gear still excited me, I'd have got it already.

What's that? I can use it on the f100 and film. Damn. Off to check eBay! [emoji23]

I had the chance to test it and it does have some cool
qualities for night photography but what I could do with
it could not be justified as business decision. Mind you, I
am lucky enough to be able to afford /acquire anything
I need but restrains on the gear I would want.

 
D810 & D750 are my current workhorses. I don't have an issue switching between the two. All Nikon menus are fundamentally the same. To be honest I prefer the the mode dial on the D750 than the mode button but working the two cameras togethers are not an issue. I actually considered that they may be, I was in the same boat as you 12 months ago.
 
You may find the user presets on the D750 mitigate your muscle memory concerns. If however you prefer to set/change ISO white balance etc, the different layouts may trip you up in the short term while you get accustomed. One 'benefit' is the slightly smaller file sizes to speed up your workflow. All depends on your methodology. I think you will know if the feature differences intrest you, wifi, tilt screen etc.
 
Interesting feedback, thanks folks. Well my flat mate has just ordered a d750 for himself so i'm basically going to set it up how i like it and see how it feels going between the two. Then perhaps take the plunge :)

Any noticeable benefits of the D810 over the D750 at weddings? In the same quandry at the moment.

The shutter is considerably more quieter and smoother than the D750 and less unobtrusive which is a major benefit in church. The flash synch speed is 1/250 on the D810 and rated to 200k actuations.
 
Last year we used a mixture of D810, D800 and a D750 for weddings. Didn't have any issues switching between either. They all have there plus and minus points, getting the files to all look the same though does add a little extra work so this year we will be using mostly 2 x D750's. Although also flirting with the idea of picking up a D500.

The D810 can show quite a lot of moire on suits etc which we haven't experienced with the others.

So i've been playing with my flat mate's d750 a bit and actually set it up for him pretty much as I have my 810. It's a great little camera...i'm not having any problem with the back button focus being more to the left than the af-on button on the d810 or anything like that. However, the shutter is definitely far louder which is a shame. If it had as quiet a shutter as the 810 i think i wouldn't hesitate to get one. I'm going to see if can use my friend's one a bit more and make my mind up..
 
The 58mm is a stunning lens. If you shoot people it's hard to beat.

But I'm a firm believer in two identical bodies.
