At the moment I'm with BT for landline and Plusnet (madasafish) for broadband >20GB/month.
I'm thinking of changing both and Orange my mobile phone contractors have come up with an offer £16 cheaper per month than what I am paying at the moment.
Anyone use Orange for both services and if so what do you think of them.
alternatively, I was thinking of sticking with Bt for both but would welcome any other suggestions.
Also with Sky+ for tv.
Thanks
Dave

For my broadband I'm using talktalk I got a deal at £3.49 per month deal ( they run this offer every month or so) its 3.49 p/m for 12 months then £6.99 after its 20gb or 40gb data limit, never got near 20. , better than br, never had an issue with service or account. With bt i was forever on the phone, wrong bills, poor service.

I have just moved from orange to BT.

Main reason, with orange they seem to block port 25, meaning that i have not been able to send emails from outlook. It has been quite a problem when trying to run my website.

No idea, I don't know enough about that kind of thing. I just knew that I could not send emails and left it in the very capapble hands of a friend who knows pretty much all there is to know about computers/the internet. Left him remote accessing my machine for a couple of hours and came back saying I would have to make do with using web mail until I can change ISP for that reason.

I would not touch them, I am with them at the moment but when I move I will be changing.

The main reason for not wanting to touch them is a little long winded but let me explain.

Dad signed up to their land line and broadband deal 10 days before he died. I phoned them to explain that we wanted to change the account holders name from my dad to mum, they told me no problem will sort it out. The next day they sent us a letter saying that they could only do this with a copy of his death certificate, was a little annoyed that they didn't say that on the phone, but never mind.
Sent a copy of his death certificate, a few days later we get a letter still addressed to dad stating that they were closing his account and as he had not returned the router and phone box, Home live or something it was called, that they were billing him for the equipment. Another phone call to them explaining the situation again, where all I got was a n Indian call center with the operative reading from a script saying that there was nothing they could do as I wasn't the account holder and they would only speak to dad about the situation, how many times do you have to say he has died before it gets through to some one!!!!! I gave up and asked for a manager who still didn't understand that they couldnt talk to dad, as you can imagine I was a little upset by this point and hung up.
I called back and managed to get an English call center, well I had a little more luck, but not a lot, I explained the whole situation from the start, they asked for another copy of the death certificate as they had never received it, that's strange they had sent it back to us!! so I emailed a copy to them, I then received a large jiffy bag from them to return the router phone box thing to them and a separate letter on the same day stating that they were looking to sart legal proceeding against my dad for the return f the equipment and the remaining outstanding monies for the entire length of the contract. I posted teir equipment back and another phone call to another one of their call centers and told them they had better start legal proceeding against dad although they may look a little silly trying to take a deceased person to court, at this point I got put onto a manager over here, had to explain the whole situation again and the fact that they had 2 copies of his death certificate and still acted like complete idiots. I will not touch Orange for any service ever again. End of Rant.

Mum ended up changing to sky and they have been really good.

I joined BT last week, was with Virgin before that. I am having same problem, cannot send emails from my Outlook ...anyone got a fix for me please?

what email provider are you using? and are you using BT or the providers SMTP server?

if youre trying to use BT SMTP with another email providers address it probably wont work. you will need to use your email providers SMTP and probably enable authentication with your username and password.

Neil, I am using BT - when I changed over the PC/BT basically set up outlook for me. It was set for Virgin before, butneed to delete that as they will discontine my email addy.

I could not find the settings to do the POP etc myself for BT and as it did it for me assumed it had done it all correctly.

Am I making sense ....

I will be using my BT email addy.

Will check when I am at home as I do not have laptop with me. Recieve is fine just send.

Dave - really sorry to hear about your sad loss and frustration about the inept way Orange handled your case. I think I may give Orange a wide berth.
Thanks to all for your kind help and look to either BT or Virgin.
At the moment I'm on calls anytime with BT and want to stay with that oprion so it may be BT at the end of the day.
Thanks again
Dave

I will never use orange again because of the issues I had with their customer service! They just didn't listen, all scripted as said above. It took over 8months for them to try and sort an issue out with the internet disconnecting in the end it took help from a friend that worked in the call centre down the road from me (even though every time I called I got sent to india!!) to pull some strings and get it cancelled!!

okay can you check the settings in outlook and see what SMTP and POP servers you are using?

do you get any errors when you send/receive?

Evening Neil, I have just sorted it out. I knew I knew how to do it, just not done it for years and relied on them to do it. Thank you for you time :)

Cheers Dave, this was all nearly 4 years ago. I just will never touch them with a barge pole. Same as I would never touch talk talk for the same reasons.

Do you mean that Orange do not provide an SMTP server for their customers to relay through, or you cannot relay through a thrid party SMTP service that you have an account on?

Either way, it's rubbish, but the first possibility is appalling. If it's true they don't deserve to call themselves an ISP.

I take a dim view of blocked or proxied ports or anything else that filters my view of the internet that I don't control.

A lot of ISPs are blocking port 25 as they are trying to stop spam being sent from infected computers. They have an smtp server, but only for their own email addresses. If you want to send email from other addresses you will need your own smtp server and use an alternative port. You can often get an smtp server with your web hosting.

It is a good idea. It is reactive instead of proactive, I think the next version of Windows should block people from going on the internet if they don't have antivirus software and haven't recently done a scan.

That would just be silly and would send a lot of people to mac or linux. I have never installed any anti virus product and have never had any problems. I have seen a lot of problems caused by anti virus products though.

Not wishing to be overly rude, but I suspect that your friend doesn't know quite as much about IT as you think he does.

It's not a good idea. It's the ISP treating its entire userbase like children and hiding the knives in case they cut their fingers off :(

Avoid Orange like the plague!

They never answer e-mails and have no interest in customers once they have your money.

I'm stuck with them for a while on a mobile phone but as soon as my contract is up I'm off them permanently and will certainly never use them again!

I'm not sure, but he is responsible for a rather large and ever expanding data centre, and provides my hosting. Either way, he knows infinately more than me.

Aside from the email issue, my change from orange to BT has seen my download speed incread from averages of 1.2mbs to 6.5mbs.

I've been with Orange for 6+ years now, and never had any issues. Its like any ISP, you'll probably only hear about the bad reviews!

If he provides your hosting and can't get your outbound emails to work, then you either need to have a serious word or look at getting a better, more switched on provider.
