No
i was about to try and install windows via bootcamp, but it asks for install discs. however i don't have this.

my macbook has snow leopard on it already, can i just buy a replacement snow leopard disc to make it work, or does it need the original or if i go new disc route will i have to reinstall snow leopard?

as long as the version of snow leopard you have installed when the mac shipped is less than or equal to whatever version you buy then it will work. But more to the point is how come you don't have your install discs? Thats not good.

I couldn't find my discs when I wanted to set up boot camp so just downloaded a snow leopard image from t'internet and installed the drivers from there.

Found my original disc now :)

thanks for your help. have now decided to change HDD and reinstall snow leopard with a disc i hope to be getting.

from what i understand you need to partition drives with disc space. how much space does windows xp and microsoft office take up? i will also be possibly loading something else, but won't be using it loads.

Bear in mind that when you install Snow Leopard from an OS disk you won't get the iLife programs.

Also, when it asks for an Install Disk - is this the Bootcamp Assistant asking, or do you mean that you need the Snow Leopard disk to install the drivers once you've installed Windows?

If it's the Bootcamp Assistant asking, then I think you'll find it's asking for the Windows install media.

yeah that sounds about right as well, I don't recall bootcamp assistant needing my osx disc when I set it up.

as for your 10.6.2, thats the version you have now, as it may have been updated, what's important is the version when your mac was shipped.

I think you need the OS X disc for installing the drivers to the windows partition.

If you are buying the OS X disc from Amazon etc you will lose out on the iLife software, including iPhoto, although you can buy these separatly.

aquiring new discs

do you need to set partition? how much memory does xp need?

Depending on how often you are planning on using windows, Parallels is a far better bet. Bootcamp is OK for occasional use but it becomes a real pain switching if you are going to use XP every day, Parallels means you can have both running at the same time.
