I've not used OS 8 but can you make sure that the Airport card is working?

the wireless card was brand new off ebay but some one told me that it was on too low an operating system to cope with it but would you or anyone know any different?

Are you sure there is enough pressure in the steam cylinder?

I'm afraid you've lost me there would you explain? please

OK Lets start from scratch. I had similar problems with a friends machine but we got that working.

First of all ( This is the Grandma and sucking eggs bit) check that Airport is on, and it can see your network ( wireless Router).

If it's secure network you'll need to type in the password.

You've probably done all that so now comes the bit I found works. Check the level of encryption. You will probably several options, probably starting at 64 bit. ( you'll find this within the Airport options)

If your router is fairly modern it's probably on 128 bit encryption. This is what I found. Change to 128 and hey Presto we were on.

I hope it's as easy as that. ( did take me a while though as I thought the hub was 64 bit. If it's a BT home Hub it's 128.)

If that fails try the other encryption options

right I've tried that before i think. at the moment its on my knee in front of my imac trying to do it the problem is I can't actually find the Airport on the computer & its not at the stage of finding the wireless network as it can't be turned on as i can't find it :(
would you have any other ideas John?

& yes Darren its ancient but its a mac so it never dies :D any ideas appreciated

Ok then....

Which version of MacOS are you running?

Hi John I've found TCP/IP & inside there's the TCP/IP info bar & it says in a box

This Macintosh <not available>
Hardware address <not available>
Router <not available>

is this a fault or normal ?

Ok, none of my tips are going to help then.

First of all go to your router and turn OFF all the security, YES ALL OF IT!!

If you are a bit paranoid turn off all your other computers but you wouldn't believe how many open networks I find whilst wandering about :)

Anyway once you have turned off the security you can try and connect. Can you find the airport device in the hardware profile? Does the computer show you a list of networks.....

when you say router do you mean on the computer cos i can't find router at all
& the actual "Airport wireless card isn't being recognized :(

Right, first off, what is creating your actual wireless network? Is it a Airport extreme/express OR is it a wireless router supplied by your ISP or that you have bought OR are you trying to create an AD-HOC wireless connection between two apple computers?

i bought off ebay an airport wireless card & we use a bt homehub and all i want to be able to do is browse the internet i got the wireless card off ebay from china apparently new

Right, your WIRELESS ROUTER is your BT home hub. You can you access this and turn OFF the security temporarily. The reason I said this is that in order to find the actual problem we would need to remove other variables. Which we can then put back later.

BUT

I wasn't aware when I first mentioned it that your wireless card is not being recognised. The most likely situation is that the card is faulty or the wrong one for your laptop.
