are Canon FL and FD mount lenses the same?

Basically am just wondering if an older FL mount Canon lens will work with a Canon body that takes FD mount lenses...or will I need an adapter?

HMM!!!! Doing a quick Google it would appear that the answer is Yes.

But I am not totally familiar with the difference between them.

Yes it will, essentially the same mount. You 'll just need to use stopped-down metering.
