are these worth buying?

Some cameras have a system built in, the D3 has a readout that looks a bit like the artificial horizon you get in aircraft, I believe the D700 has it as well, although I have never tried it.
I have one of the bubble ones in a bag in my attic, it was one of those "must have, can't live without" items that got used once and chucked in a junk bag.
It might be usefull if you do a lot of architectural photography and have to get things exactly level, but otherwise I'd save my money if I were you

I used to have one of the bubble type myself many years back, but to be perfectly honest I don't ever recall using it, (and neither felt the need to) even though my photography is mostly landscapes and architecture. It was one of several bits and pieces that I bought on the cheap back then that ended up in the loft. :D

To be fair getting the camera level is quite easy and if you find like me that a couple of shots that day are out of line then they can be put straight in PP, I used to have the camera all over the placwe when i first started now i just take that extra second to look to see if the horizon is staight in the viewfinder

Yeh one of those things you use once and after that it ends up in the loft or you loose it in your bag.

I have a Seculine digital level as well as a few of the bubble type. The bubble ones all have different ideas as to what's level and cannot be seen when the camera's at the eye (the Seculine's lights are visible in the top of peripheral vision so you can tell when you've got it right. Don't use it now on my main camera since it (a D700) has a level built in. Use it on the D70 which has no such gizmo.

The only little bubble level that was accurate when checked against a known accurate long builders' level stays in the picture hanging kit.

I use a seculine digital one for the majority of shots and find it pretty much essential. The last thing you want is to spend time setting up the perfect "scene" and then end up having to crop it in PP because you didn't take an extra 2 minutes to make sure it was level :bonk:
