Are you shy?

Yes
I am, it's terrible for photography, my missus was standing out the front of her house last night chatting to the neighbours, she was holding her 1 year old daughter (The Neighbour) so i nipped indoors (as you do) to grab the camera, didn't take 1 photo  i dunno i guess i get embarresed about such shots. If i am asked to go do a shoot i have no problems but for some reason i do clam up often esp if it's people i know.

Anyone else have this problem? if so how do you cope with it, and for those that don't how do you go about such time?

I'm not that shy but I'm always conscious that I hate my photo being taken and others might feel the same ;)

If there are any family parties I always take my camera and always get "Oh look, Russ has got his camera...... AGAIN!" and "Do you ever go out without that thing?"

But on the whole everyone loves the way I capture these family events ;-)

I went to a colleague's 40th Birthday party on Saturday and she asked if I'd mind bringing my camera along to get a few shots. Seeing as I was on call for my day job and I couldn't drink anyway I agreed.

Not many people there and not much going on tbh and I did feel a little conspicuous carrying a big DSLR around with me.

I only got around 15 decent shots. Put the pictures on FB and got asked by one woman (via email) to take a picture of her down because she wasn't actually on Facebook so that's fair enough and then another woman made a snotty comment on a photo of her about being "plastered" all over FB, pee'd me off a little as I was only trying to get pictures for the birthday girl but each to their own

Totally - hate having my picture taken, don't even like taking pictures with people in them. That's why I concentrate on landscapes, and will wait ages for people to walk out of shot. I don't advertise the fact that I am a photographer among acquaintances but it does come up, and when I am asked to take someone's picture I always refuse.

At one point in the past I spent a couple of years as a wedding and portrait photographer (while managing a photography shop) - and hated it. Gave up photography for over ten years as a result of that. :(

What makes you feel that way about shooting people? i find once i have taken 15 - 20 shots then it's a job to stop me lol

I think it's that I am agoraphobic. used to think that that meant not liking being in the open, but it actually means being among people. Always been a loner and enjoy nothing more than being out in the wild on my own or with my wife. If there is no one else in sight that's how I like it.

Also suffer from social anxiety (they are probably connected) so photographing people is probably not the best thing to do :)

And though that isn't me in my avatar it is about as close as I would get to having my picture taken

Yep, still shy and hate having my photo taken. I used to be worse, but I'm partially cured having been engaged to an extremely extrovert woman for a number of years now....she doesn't give me any option but to interact in a lot more social situations.:D

I'm fine with people I know, just have a problem approaching strangers

I dont like having my photo taken, but thats because I'm an ugly MoFo, not because Im shy.

I don't know if it is associated with being camera shy myself but I just never take pictures of people unless I have been specifically asked to do so. My collection of several thousand photos probably has less than twenty with any people in them.
