Are you undervaluing yourself?

Yes
There are some good specific style of landscape shots on this site http://www.blacklockgallery.com/horizons/horizonsgalry.html# but I have seen some that I consider are just as good done by members on here.

Now have a look at the price of prints from the above site http://www.blacklockgallery.com/horizons/index.html and compare those prices to the sort of price normally talked about on here for similar quality work.

Are the great photographers on here really undervaluing their work or do blacklocks know something we don't?

Think some of us missing a trick here though.

There must be a market Martyn or they'd be gone by now. Business reception areas? Hotel Lobby's? Who knows, but if they weren't selling it wouldn't exist or prices would be adjusted downwards to meet the market. Just my thoughts of course. The spiralling prices/pressure selling angle I don't think would work in the UK.

Some of those pictures are nice, but I wouldn't even consider buying anything if all I had to go on was a tiny image on a website.

Let alone at those prices! Outrageous! Who is this guy anyway? Has he got a track record? Is this his first book? Did he self-publish it? I'd be surprised if he sold any at all!

Or maybe he's just got the gall to go out and sell himself as the best thing since sliced bread and rake in some cash from a few punters? There is a train of thought that if something is expensive it MUST be good.

Having said all that I do think people sell their stuff far too cheaply generally. I used to sell more exhibition prints 20 years ago when I was a "newbie" than I do now as someone with a reputation. And the prices haven't changed much either.

Making money out of this game doesn't appear to be as much about your actual technical expertise (beyond achieving a reasonable level) as much as your ability to make and exploit contacts in the right area.

I'd say you could be the best photographer in the world and produce stunning output but without marketing yourself really hard, you will achieve no commercial success.

Additionally its quite hard because there are always people of certainly average and above skill prepared to give away their work for the fame of publication/usage. And that situation will become worse over time as more of us attain pretty much pro equipment to be used in a strictly amateur use.

Being able to shoot is no good if you're not able to sell.

Not too crazy about the website.

True... although you probably wont need to sell many :p
